gc3

26x42x.44 deep each side upper panel 6:50 hrs 26x26x.44 deep lower panel 3 hrs .25 ballnose 10% stepover

with the panel cut both sides it does not cup or warp....one side only and yes there will be movement.

small question but I just want to clarify. When carvers say ball nose bit, is that the same bit that you would use if you wanted to make flutes, also called a core box bit?

Thanks Jason

price I listed was for .125 endmill.....sorry .25 2 flute $9

as I live in Mexico these guys have the best cost/shipping prices for us.

http://www.starkemillwork.com/moulding-catalog.htm on another note you can download dxf files of molding profiles from this link...today i had to do several small runs of a match for a friend and I found the profiles here.

Thanks for the helpful info. I ordered a few to try them out. So does .25 give plenty of detail? When would you go with a smaller bit?

The Starke millwork links are an awesome resource. Thanks Jason

small question but I just want to clarify. When carvers say ball nose bit, is that the same bit that you would use if you wanted to make flutes, also called a core box bit?

Thanks Jason

The ball nose most carvers refer to is rounded only at the tip and not up the sides of the bit as a core box might be. Here's an example from Centurion Tools: https://centuriontools.com/router_bits_toolcase/centurion_tools_showcase.html?page=full&cart=128828227838601510&__max=20&--eqskudatarq=14US2.752.5BN&id1=374&id2=735&id3=769

This panel has .375 left to fit into the stile/rail groove. This 1.75 thick frame takes out any movement caused by the carving.

Very Nice work Gene. Man you said you were cutting at 5 ips on xy and 3 ips on z. I have a 2007 PRS standard and I cannot cut that fast without loosing steps. Best I can get is 3 ips on xy. Maybe I should look for a "vintage" machine. Keep the pics coming and if you ever need a helper or wish to take on a student I want to be first in line. Friggin cold here today in Ontario Canada.

Cheers Gene and all the best for the New Year.

Beautiful work Gene.
I use to do that kind of carving by hand.
Now that I have my Bot, I can't wait to get Aspire and carve some more.
How long have you been woodworking?
You obviously have years of experience and a flair for good taste.
I especially like the armoire, as it is close to Quebec's antique furniture style.
Keep up the excellent work.

hands down 4g...major improvement over 3.4.27 control software you are running now plus it's 2000 steps/rev with 4g not 200 steps/rev with your existing board

...then when you can, upgrade your design software

I am sure there are guys who run big iron who couldn't handle this.

Mike - You bet! I can't tell you how much work I get from the Eastern seaboard from shops who have invested in big iron & it is cheaper for me to machine it on my SB than it is for them to run it because the big iron is too slow for 3D. Plus, many of the big machines lock up their control software so that you can't tweak the ramps without paying them big bucks to send a tech out to do it for you...Forget that! If you can't tweak it - you don't own it!

Mark,
4G stands for 4th Generation of Standard (non-Alpha) tools. Your Alpha has a superior drive system to a 4G, so it doesn't really apply to your tool.

Gene,
One more question about the 4G board. I'm not trying to hijack your thread, but I haven't been able to find much info on the ShopBot website or the forum about the 4g upgrade. Maybe I'm just searching wrong.

Are you using a porter cable router? What is the "safe" max speed you can jog at and what is the "safe" max cut speed in 3/4" plywood cut in 3 passes?
I am talking to ShopBot about the upgrade and they said it is just the board and gecko drives. Do I use the same power supply? They said I get $250 off if I send my old board back but I am thinking I would want to keep it as a backup?

Thanks in advance for your help, and if anyone has any more info or a link to more info about it, please forward it to me. I don't post much on the forum, but have been following along for many years now.

try doing a google search for

site:talkshopbot.com 4g upgrade

Sometimes this is quite a bit more effective than the built in forum search.

Thanks Mike and Brady, I just did the google search and found 2 posts answering all my questions. I also did contact ShopBot and got the pricing. I think I'm going to do the upgrade by the end of next month.

here is a photo of my "beast"...i have jog set at 12IPS and have no problems. mdf and plywood i usually cut 5.0 IPS if using 3 passes the 4g board is a true plug n play setup...makes a big difference you'll be glad you upgraded, send in old board for the rebate don't think you would ever go back.....

My first choice when I upgrade will probably be a used Thermwood. However, I am curious to see what you think, of your new machine. The shear weight alone, should be quite nice.

That's a great design if you are using it as a screen or as a panel in a cabinet or something. I enjoy seeing all the things you come up with Gene.

Thanks Kevin, no I didn't model it I'm not there yet...these are for another shop they were trying to do these by hand, they submitted that sample and were not going to get the work then they contacted me, I cut a sample...they got the job I got to cut the panels!

Why did they use solid wood when they could have used foam ?

The finishing what did you or they used ?

The instalion must have been tricky

How often do you use mdf for the door panels or do you use solid wood for all of the projects? Is there a site to look at all your work? It is quite impressive to say the least.
