I just finished doing a 3d carving finishing pass in mdf and went to do a C2 after inserting a vbit for some text and went and clipped my alligator clip on as usual put the aluminum plate down pressed C2 and the Z lowered and kept pressing down till it defaulted and crapped out. I tried putting the clip in various places with the same result.

I thought maybe mdf dust was making it so i was not getting good contact but i cleaned all places.

When i take the al plate and touch the router bit the light on the control panel lights up so it is making contact and a complete circuit. I decided to shut everything down and start over incase their are gremlins in the control box, Any ideas what to do to fix this?

Have you checked in your shopbot setup that you have a z zero plate.

Make sure you didn't "bump" your e-stop.

I have had to hit my E stop a couple times lately but once you hit the reset button that clears it up. I also have had my proximity switch go past the bolt because the doublestick tape is failing and it hits the mechanical stop and craps out, and i have to reset.

In a sense they are related because they are all proximity switches but this is solely on the Z when i try to C2 it just keeps going till it bottoms out.

Sounds like Z-zero prox is turned off if the light come on but it doesn't stop.

Jack, Have you "upgraded" your sb3 lately?

When I put 3.6.20 on my machine, it started doing the same thing.

I went and got an old copy of the z zero routine from an older version and it works fine now.

I have an older version something like 3.5x It is a version or 2 back. I haven't upgraded lately or changed or done anything lately. It worked fine on the previous cut, then it did it on this cut. I am going out now to try it again so i'll see if it is doing the same thing.

could be as simple as gunk on the tip. I have had that happen. sometimes the software just glitches out too.

I found the source of the problem. When i opened up the control box several of these jumped out and ran around the shop till i was able to catch one and see what it was.

I did a google search and found out that it is a gremlin named "rarry" that likes to feast off of the silicon material in computer chips. Lucky i found them before they did much damage but the others got away so i'll be on the look out....

So its works now...back to normal
