Hi, I'm in the process of setting up a 2005 PRT Alpha that I bought without the PC & Control SB software. i also have a PRS Buddy Standard that does have working control software, Partworks & Aspire. I've not yet setup a PC for the Alpha and am anxious to see if I can at least spin the steppers on it to know if the controller, harness and steppers are working.

to make a long story short. Does anyone know if I can simply plug the USB cable of my Standard Buddy PC into the Alpha controller box to spin the steppers in forward and reverse without creating the magic smoke or some similar catastrophe?

I guess I'd just want to use jogging as I can imagine a runaway carriage being that the Alpha does not have geared motors and the Buddy does and I don't want to start tinkering with the Buddy settings because I have no experience with that yet.

Thanks much,
Gerry

You can set up an "additional" SB3 on your PC by simply setting up a new file for it to run out of with the settings for the alpha and run from the alpha control box to the computer. You can also run setup on your current SB3 software and configure it for the Alpha. I would not mix controllers. I can't say it wouldn't work but it does seem pretty chancy without the right person telling you it would be OK. That would be SB support or probably Brady.
