I am wondering if anyone has a good source for 90 degree V-groove bits that will cut a depth of a little more than 1" through foam in a single pass? Ideally, the shank would be 1/4". We are cutting bevels onto the edges of 5 PCF foam sheet.

Amana has one with a cutting depth of 1 3/4" with 1/2" shank. Max RPM 12K recommended.

Will need to be 2" diameter on v-90 to cut 1" deep in a single pass
not sure I would want that large a cutter on a 1/4" shank though! spring for a collet and go with a 1/2" shank

the only complaint with the amana bits are that they don't come to a sharp point. but for what you are doing that would be fine.

I use Hersaf and completely satisfied because the carbide cutter us replacible for a whole $10. I have replaced the carbide once and the cutter is exactly at the center. You can buy either a 1/4 or 1/2" shaft (I use 1/2") and it runs very smoothly.

Cutter $65

I have used them for 2 years and I am still happy!

The HerSaf is a nice tool, but the inserts vary just enough that some will cut to a point and some will leave a noticeable flat at the bottom of the cut. I did call them and they indicated that you could order some specced to be very close to a point.

Don,
Ballew Saw and Tool will have what you need. Their web sit leaves a lot to be desired, but they have a lot. You can call them at 800-288-7438. Ask for Fred or Jack. Their excellent people and have good prices.

If yo need something custom, call Hickory Saw and Tool. Ask for Gary. They make custom tooling for the furniture companies. 828-324-5585 Excellent people as well. They do the best job on custom stuff and sharpening of anyone else that I have ever used.

Here is a site I came across a few weeks ago for standard end mills with an extra long length. I know nothing about them and haven't ordered from them yet, but plan on giving them a try soon. Their prices seem insanely cheep!

Hope this helps!

I did call them and they indicated that you could order some specced to be very close to a point.

Be prepared for a lot of frustration when you change out to a new insert to get them to cut right! Gave up on the one I got that was "Specced", not even close. They also don't have enough clearance ground on the trailing edge and it drags making a mark in deeper v-carving. Had to grind more relief myself to provide enough clearance.

Thanks folks for the informative posts.

Yesterday I was considering purchasing from Her Saf. I was concerned about the product. This info came at the right time.

Thanks for the replies. I think I will try the Her Saf. Probably best to go for the 1/2" shank (even if we are only cutting foam).
