I've been looking through old magazines and on the net to try to find some plans (or just inspriration) for a rolling tool workstation I could make and just leave on site, in a closet at a particular building that I do a lot of work on.

I'd need storage for some basic small hand tools, and also some power tools like skill saw, drills, screwgun, sawzall, etc.

Harbor Freight actually has a rolling cart on sale for $140 and I doubt I could build anything myself cheaper but it is mainly setup with the shallow drawers for mechanics type tools, no deep drawers for power tools and woodworking stuff. They have these other rolling maintenance/cleaning carts but they have no drawers at all.

It's probably got to be a custom. I'm picturing more of a MDF or melamine project. Anyone come across something like this?

Would this give you any inspiration?

This is my roll-around tool cabinet. Made from bubinga, curly maple, bloodwood and ebony along with compass rose and other inlays. Maybe not a tool cabinet for moving from site to site but maybe a place to start?

Still a work in progress but functional.

Don:
And here I was today telling one of the men that I need to stop putting off a cabinet for my own tools and get it done. Really nice job. Now I have to do something to live up to that!!

John,

Check with your local theatres. As a stage hand of many years, I have built at least 50 of these boxes for various things. A couple of thoughts. Boxes get heavy quick when you add tools. Don't build a big box and expect to move it from job site to site without a forklift. I use a jobbox for my onsite tools. I have it on a furniture dolly and I can lift it to the gate of my truck. If you really need a custom box, lay out every thing and make sure you have room for the big stuff and then worry about the small stuff.

Dave,

It is still a work-in-progress. I have to figure out what I want to do with the raised panel doors that will enclose the top part (carved, inlay, marquetry, etc.) and what type of handles to make for the lower drawers and doors. After that I need to build a custom organizer (sounds like a job for Walle') for measuring tools (squares, etc.), handsaw drawer and then flock the interiors of these drawers to make them easier on the tools.

Lots to do and I have to make the time to do it.

one suggestion i would make, since i am super cheap rather then make one you might try looking in your area for auctions. Here we had the university of virginia auctions or try city auctions. You could probably find something that would work for you for $5.00-$10.00.

I got about 8 of these for a total of $5.00.:D
