Does anyone know where to find scale drawings of O gauge Lionel track. I am looking to cut out templates for a track layout before laying the actual track.

I would first search the internet Lionel trains o gage

http://trainz.com/c-109-o-tubular.aspx

There were several design books for under $10

Another site had each track configuration... you could run
in the bitmap file, turn to vectors and then scale to the size they say it is
keeping x/y relationship

I am sure there is a spec book out there... our town has a train shop... I could check with them also but I think the design books may be of great help...

I did see a catalog in the last month that you build your own track... I have a 1940 train set which I have not used since 1965... when grandkids come, that will be a passion to reinstate! I will try to think where it is because it had separate ties and 5 foot rails which you can mold into any shape you want to...

Was thinking that making RR stations would be a fun side business for
our shopbot... but not sure there would be any money in it (distribution).

The shopbot just gives me too many ideas and not enough lifetimes...

OK, back to the question. I thought the Lionel parts diagrams would have templates but I looked and they don't. Second choice is to trace and scan the parts you want to make templates for. Aspire makes this easy. I don't make switch templates but I do make track radius pieces for laying the whole thing out. The switches are a known radius so if you lay out your straight tracks and then lay your radius templates on top of that it's pretty easy to finish the track layout. Have fun! :)

As far as O scale stuff I've done tunnel portals and rough stuff but nothing as fine as a structure. The laser guys seem to have a slight edge on that. However with the new hold down attachment from Widgetworks I think I may have to give that another looksee! :) Russ

Atlas Model Railroad Co. has a freeware for track layout that has .dxf export options.
