I am building an indexer for my engraving machine. This allows me to engrave cylindrical objects like glasses and bottles with a diamond bit.

This could easily be scaled up for use on the ShopBot.

I used a NEMA 23 10:1 planetary gearbox but NEMA 34 is also available in 5:1 and 10:1 ratios.

Using XL timing belt and pulleys I have a final ratio of 20:1. This is the ratio the manufacturer uses on the accessory they offer.

I didn’t have any ½” Aluminum on hand but had some ½” Micarta left over from a previous job. This stuff cuts like wood and almost has the strength of aluminum. A lot of custom knife makers use this material for handles. It’s very tough and waterproof. I have to use water when rotary engraving glass with a diamond bit so I needed a material that was waterproof.

I still have to design the tailstock.

Designed and toolpathed with Aspire and cut with the ShopBot.

very cool. Show us some pics when you get the tailstock and start engraving something. Good job

I finished the indexer this weekend. I still have to get a small pump and hose to flush the diamond tip with water.
