I am trying to work out how to make some small labels for some sail training vessels we are building. The labels will be about 1.5" long, and will have descriptions like " 12 VOLT DC POWER". Font height will be about 3/16" high. We are planning to use ColorCore for the label material. Does anyone have a recommendation for the correct bit size and and font to use?

Script 1L cuts pretty clean, it is a single line font

Two good sources for engraving bits are bits n bits and Onsrud. The guys at BNB will give you excellant advice on size etc.
Johnson plastics has many varieties of engraving plastic for labels as well.
I have shallow engraved single line text with 15 degree bits and 10 degree.

I am going try some single line font with a 10 degree bit. I will probably do some practicing in MDF.
Thanks for the help.

For a 3/16" height, I would think you would need a .0625 end mill or maybe even smaller to get a clean, consistant stroke.

A V bit will vary in stroke width if your material is not perfectly flat.

we would not use hdpe color core made by king or laminations to do 3/16'' high letters. the top layer is too thick. you can try polyscribe which has a .050 top layer . buy from rs supply (800) 782-4467

you are better off using Romark engraving material. they have exterior. it is thin at approx. .125'' thick but is made for small letters and things like you want to do.

we have also used pvc at any thickness and just painted the top layer with paint. we use SEM vinyl spray paint from the auto paint supplier but you could use krylon also. we have had excellent results with this .
