I have a 2005 PRT with the 4g upgrade. I've been through 2 different brands and have had nothing but problems. I did the speed test on both with either one installed and was in the 80's but I kept loosing steps and getting com port era's with both. So I just took it out of line. Right now I have a 4 port USB card installed in the puter with the cable directly to that and am up and running just fine at 73.3. Do I even need a hub? The Dell that came with the machine is NOW 1.5g. One of the brands I was using was a Berklin and the other escapes me. Came from wally world. Any help you suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Kurt...
The SB controller card needs a USB2.0 hub in line to "force" an enhanced USB 2 connection. So, yes, with a Dell you should run both a PCI card AND a hub. Also, make sure that if you have a spindle speed control, that it is plugged into a second port on the PCI card and NOT into the hub.

Kurt: I would increse the ram if possible and put the hub back on.

Upping the RAM will do nothing for your communication issues - BUT it is cheap & will increase the size of the 3D file you can run in SB3.
On your Dell, run a USB 2.0 PCI CARD. Open up computer, clean it(!) and install the card. Staples sells them for around $40 or so.
THEN, get ANY self-powered hub (meaning it doesn't require a wall socket for power) and plug that into the 2.0 CARD you put in.
THEN plug the bot into the hub.
Also - check your computer really well and see Settings-> Add/Remove Programs that there isn't nonsense programs on there looking for an update from the internet. Turn off screensavers, get rid of power management, so that it doesn't shut down the monitor, hard drive etc for AT LEAST 5 hours.

The hub that came with my buddy went belly up. My dell mini ten has 2.0 usb enhanced ports (i think i said that right). anyhow i plug straight into the port without a hub and have had no problems since, v-carve or 3d.
every time i think i know computers i learn something else.
