Hello,
So I am new at sign making and CNC machining all together. I have been using Sign painters 1 Shot Lettering Enamel 109-L Metallic Gold that a local art supply store told me I should use, because all the sign makers use it. I have seen one shop use it.

I just did a sign using the gold and it looks great, but when I installed it the gold didn't have the same look as it did in my shop (aka dinning room) where it had direct light on it. And when I go around town there is one other sign with gold, and it looks bright and really shiny. But mine not so much. The customer did have a much thinner font than this other sign I saw, but what am I doing wrong? It still looks good, it just doesn't POP as much as I thought it would.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

Lindsay

nothing looks as much like real gold as real gold..... but for going that, I have seen allot of signs rough texture their gold paint, I guess it give it more area to reflect

If you're going to paint it, use One Shot Metallic Brass instead. It looks like gold when it dries, their "gold" looks like mustard when it dries.....

Also most signpainters use a base colour that will accent the gold. I think my buddy uses a yellow paint under the brass paint that Bill suggested and he also uses certain colours under when applying gold leave. I will ask him next week when I talk to him and post or pm his advice. When he wants a texture to his gold leaf letters he use a gorilla glue technique. The website called letterville has allot of very talented sign painters and pin strippers on it and a great place for resources. www.letterville.com (http://www.letterville.com)
And nothing does look as "shiny" as real gold leaf. Wheres Dr. Crumley......he is a expert at this stuff.

This is great! Thank you guys! MUCH appreciated. I am going to get the brass color and repaint where I painted before. I will just use the old gold color as my base for this. Thank you thank you!!

Try Modern Masters Pharaoh's Gold ME660. It may take two coats but it's the best I have found. It's water based so clean up is easy. It can be brushed, rolled or sprayed. Last quart I bought was $29.
