only problem is I need a 1/2" shaft. but the endmills are pretty expensive though. I can live with the corebox and I can sharpen it so it is cost effetive. I am making bowls from solid wood.

Steve,
I ordered bit extensions from Peach Tree Woodworking Supply last week because I have the same problem. They haven't arrived yet though. They are #2917 and #2916 collet extenders at $22 ea. I hope that they will work.

Steve:
Depending on the angle and diameter of the side of the bowl you may not need a bit as long as you think. Check out the distance from inside edge at the top at different heights and you may find that by the time you need to go really deep your tool will be far away enough from the bowl side not to interfere.
For a longer 1/2" ball nose source I know American Carbide has them (American-carbide.com). They do get pricey as they get long but unless you have a raised z or lowered bed your limits max out fairly quickly anyway.

I use the McMaster ones- part. no. 8878A71 is a solid carbide half-inch ball nose with a 2" length of cut. I actually just used one of these to make some bowls last week. It's a little pricey, but I think it's worth it as I use these for a lot of large-scale 3D carving as well.

the extension may be the way to go. I only need 1/2" I just have to hang a bit more bit out of the collet to keep the nut from hitting then I like. this is a small piece so that's why I need a bit longer bit.

Steve, Her Saf has a ball nose cutter that can have various length shafts. The cutting length of the bit is limited to 1/2 of the cutter diameter, but you can have a 3 inch shaft which can get into a deeper cut. The one shown is a 1". They do have a high one time cost, but the inserts are cheaper than most bits. Amana has similar cutters, but the inserts are more expensive and the OAL of the bit is 2 5/8" total.

I did not know they had ballnose cutters. I just bought a couple v's. those may work thoug hI ma have to take a bit less off when I use the bit on the roughing path.
