I want to take this shape and make it 3 inches thick, no problem i can do that.

Then i want to take this shape and set it up on my indexer and carve a design on the face of the 3 inch thickness.
My question is can i carve a nonsymetrical shape with a design on the indexer? If so how?

Jack,

I am not sure that I understand your question. Is the shape that you have attached the profile that you are going to make into a dome and then carve something on it?

Do you have 3D software?

Kind Regards,

JIM

Jim,
I want to mount the piece in the indexer and carve a design along the 3" face of the piece and most everything i've done so far has been symetrical but this wont be if you mount it in the indexer.

Visual Mill has the capability to carve a pattern like the one you want around a ring. I'm not sure about the irregular shape, you could give them a call

Maybe cut the shape in half and create a top and bottom with a two rail sweep strategy.
Then put them back together.
I have done one half.
I don't think that I am proficient enough with ArtCam to put the whole thing together and then machine it on the indexer though, sorry.

By the way...Is this a seat for your tractor?...

yes you can easily do this in Artcam
like this unsymetrical shape..

but in your case you have to machine only three faces...its pretty easy...

khalid,
I'm not sure your referenced link is what i'm trying to do. Your example was more of a symetrical relief carving. Mine is more of an oblong face.

Yes this can be done. Get the file into STL format, pull it in & unwrap it. The surface can be engraved using toolpaths in ArtCAM. The unwrapping & setup of this type of file is no different than setting up a 'symmetrical' relief. The only thing different is the toolpath you will create for engraving operations if that is what you want to do. There are plenty of posts describing unwrapping here and on the ArtCAM forum in the 'Verified User' area.

Okay... As soon as i get start my Indexer (currently i am far far away from it), i will make a tutorial for it...
Sometime i also forget the things because i seldom use the rotary axis....this tutorial will also help me refreshing my mind..
