Is anybody familiar with this software? Any idea how well it works or what it sells for?

http://www.geomagic.com/en/

The software allows 3D scanner output to be converted to CAD models.

They claims it can convert to STL and OBJ files for Aspire to use for instance. They do not claim to be able to export to a crv3d file tho. Kinda unfortunate..

Dana,
I looked at it a few years ago when I first bought my Next Engine scanner. It is a VERY powerful program, which runs best on a computer which is loaded with lots of RAM for the processing it does. Great alignment tools for 'stitching' multiple scans, etc. BUT I think the pricing was waaaaay out of my range ( I want to say close to $20K if memory serves me correctly) They don't give the price on their web page- http://www.geomagic.com/en/products/studio/features/ , and that usually scares me...)

Dana,
In re reading your post I'm wondering if anyone has contacted the folks up at Accutrans about trying to get the CRV3D files included into their program?

I spoke with them a few years back and they were very willing to work on projects that would add more flexibility to their file converter. At $20 it's a GREAT deal for anyone who is serious about doing 3d work as it does a pretty good job of converting from one format to another...

If you need file conversion, AccuTrans as Bill points out is a great deal. You can also reliably output a number of 3D formats from Rhino3D.

The Accutrans library is used in Aspire so I'd expect they've talked about conversion formats in the past.

Dana,
I use Geomagic to run my Minolta non contact laser. It has been a year or so since i last fired it up and i know it is an older version. As I recall it did a fair job of scanning, my scanner is fairly fast where it scans in about 2-3 seconds(?) and then you can export the resulting file, i think as a stl.

I do recall that the toolset for manipulating the resulting scan was a bit clunky and not nearly as good as up to date programs. I think you would be better off using somethng more recent for file manipulation but for file scanning and capture it did a pretty good job. My version is at least 5 years old.

I think this was one of my scans with that pgm

If you buy a "magic cone hat" like Bill's.... you do not need fancy software. You simply convert "anything" into "any other thing" you want.
