View Full Version : Dust Collection options when using e-chain

I've decided to purchase some e-chain for my 48x96 because my cable support bow has broken yet again.

My question, how is the best way to handle the dust collection hose? Some of you suspend it from the ceiling. How is that working for you?

Simple as this for me but I do have a low ceiling. Works perfectly though.

Nice setup Adrian! On a new thread so this one doesn't get hijacked - any chance you could post some info & pics on your enclosure for some of us? Does it reduce sound levels? Would you do it again? Assuming you have time that is :)
Thanks much, Gerry

I have the dust host suspended from the ceilin. I placed 2 eyes into the ceiling
in line with the center of the machine and then used 2 bungie cords
from the eye around the dust hose and it worked perfectly... everything can stretch out to reach the far end of the bed.

I also purchased a 3 Gal drum and plastic separator which is rigt next to the machine. My dust collector is in a closet (with another separator) but my goal is to be able to gt rid of most of the dust next to the machne... This has worked very well.

The separator in the closet picks up from the machine after the first separator but also picks up from the rest of the shop (shapers, table saw, table based router). I have gate valves on every conection.

Will do. Bit dark to take decent photos now so I'll do it in the morning.

Tom,

I wanted to post what I did with my dust collection but I realized I didn't have a photo. So I took one today.

One of my clients had me cut the design for a job and I liked it so much I made it larger.

For those of you still persevering with The Bow (as we are)
and who may be looking for replacement material..
we made our own replacement bow from a select piece of straight-grain ASH
about 1/4 inch thick ..maybe a wee bit thicker

It has lasted well so far, but it is important to note that we had TWO replacements made
-one in use, the second one to hang uselessly forever more against our SB shop wall!

If we didn't have the spare, the first one would have broken long ago
but as the situation stands now, things looks stable.

Reminds me a bit of the support we conjured up for the long PVC tube that follows the gantry
as it 'dispenses' the control wires leading to our X,Y and Z motors.

The three ring-mounts holding the pipe securely on top the mount
were cut from PVC foam-board.

See attachment below.

Here's an idea derived from sponge-ing this forum...works great if you have a higher ceiling (mine are 12ft). might be tight in a typical 8ft ceiling.

My DC is way different. It uses E-Chain in a big way. See here (http://www.talkshopbot.com/forum/showthread.php?t=507&highlight=crispy). Hope this gets the creative juices flowin....

David,

Thanks for sharing yours also. I am going to 6" pipe and I am going to make mine larger.

My ceiling is pretty low so I went with a swing arm. It keeps the hose out of the way and no kinks keep the airflow high.

Great pics & ideas, guys! Thanks for posting. Bill Palumbo had a similar arm in his shop years ago. I was just looking for some ideas this week because in my new shop I'll have to run my dust collection a little differently. Good timing...

I'll probably fab up some kind of arm, but I am not sure just how long I am going to make it yet. I have to traverse 16' of table on the X. I'll have to see how much 'hose dangle' I can get away with to keep the arm as short as possible. I was looking into doing a festoon type setup, but I really don't want to hear it slapping around every time there is a large change in X. I could make the boom telescopic, but I want to see how short I can go before I get too fancy with it.

I'll probably fab something up in the next month or so...If it wasn't for these pesky customers, I could get some stuff done!!! :D

16 feet in X? Not another plasma/wood hybrid I assume. What do you plan to cut that requires that kind of length?

We will want to see pics of course.

That's why I called her 'Big Bertha' :D

I get all kinds of weird stuff that comes through the door. So far, only a few jobs have exceeded 12' in length, like 16' relief moldings that just HAD to be one piece...

Plasma is long gone...too smokey and dirty & not enough revenue generated from it. You can only make so many brackets for drag racers. I'll probably lean towards most 'action' taking place up to the 12' mark. It crossed my mind several times over the years to hack it off at the 10 or 12' mark, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it.

The 12-16' mark is an R&D/play area...On the fence about what I want to do there next, but I've got all kinds of 'attachments' and possibilities...and another 5' gantry and spindle setup. Now I just need a big block of time...

Pics when the shop looks presentable. I'm still settling in.

and it comes in at 0.188 inch thick, a bit thinner than I thought above...
