You too can be replaced. I'm not sure why it would be a tool for artists though. Note the Shopbot clip at the very beginning.

they need to make it work with a 1.7 hp die grinder, and they would be on to something.

When I am carving by hand, I think I would prefer to be in complete control. WHen I will let the machine do the work, then it can do the work..

As a woodworker and woodcarver, I still enjoy the creativity and artistic side of using a hand tool to shape wood. Why would you want to have a machine trying to guide you? If you want the machine to do the work anyhow, why use this hand held device?

I think this is intended to offer within its limitations 5+ axis machining capabilities on a more casual level. The tradeoff being that it eliminates much of the mechanical requirements associated with such a task by replacing them with hand work. Your arm, replaces the robotic arm.

I have to agree that I do not see it as a carving tool, and I don't think that is what it is intended to be. But it may very well be to an artist who prefers to sculpt or model digitally.

I think this is an innovative concept.
