I am branching out from the pre-made designs and have not quite figured out what controls the depth of plain lettering. It seems like something on the preview looks nice and deep/thick and when I go to cut it, it does not penetrate anywhere near as far. This is with a 90 degree V bit.
Sometimes, they are clearly too deep as the intersections of the letters have round marks from the tool.
So, what controls how deep the V bit goes? I can understand the effect of different sized V bits but I don't get what controls the plunge. Is it the font? The thickness of the material?

I presume you're talking about V-Carving toolpaths?
The depth is controlled by a combination of the width between the vectors and the angle of the bit.
The closer the vectors are the shallower the cut will be. The further apart they are the deeper the cut will be.
The sharper the angle of the bit the deeper the cut will be as the more acute angle bit can travel further down between the lines before it "touches" them
Hope that makes sense. If you're using PartWorks/VCarve or Aspire then search in the Help file for "VCarve Toolpath ".

It can also be controlled by the depth you set for your cut, and if you have the flat bottom depth turned on.

Of course you all figured out I meant "Text" depth! Thank you for the hints. I got some stuff figured out and will post a collection of photos soon.

The depth is sometimes set by the width of the sides of the letters. Russ
