View Full Version : Redwood 4x4

I had a 4x4 piece of redwood that I saved from a deck demolition project. I rounded it and then used a 0.75" roundover bit (from Woodline) to carve the twists. The Fluer de Lis was carved with a 1/4" ballnose bit.

I had some issues with tearout on the spirals until I tuned in the feed rate -- though wood decay may have contributed as well.

The piece on the right is the redwood. The piece on the left is the fencepost that I described in another post.

Randall I have done righthand/lefthand twists but there was always space between them and it was two seperate toolpaths, yours is one toolpath. Could you show a picture of, or your dxf so I could see how you created your toolpath?

Also i'd be interested to know how you created the redwood piece because it looks like the fleur de lys interrupts the spiral pattern and i'd like to know what kind of toolpath strategy was used..I would have thought that a typical spiral toolpath was used to make the spiral pattern pulling up over the center then coming back and carving the center in a raster pattern, am i close?
Was this created as a 3d piece to begin with?
Very cool....

quote:I would have thought that a typical spiral toolpath was used to make the spiral pattern pulling up over the center then coming back and carving the center in a raster patternYou are correct. The circle around the fluer de lis is also carved with the roundover bit. That hides the transition from the spirals to the 3D carving.

ok now that we've established that i'm a good guesser, i'm still confused about how you created the spiral toolpath and how you were able to insert the 3d file in such a way that it interrupted the spiral pattern. That says to me that you somehow had to mask off that area for where "not to" spiral, then you had to map that fleur onto that area. What program did you use to do that with?
(I actually think he's fibbing to us because i see a carving knife in the picture so he must have done this all by hand!)

Khalid has it right. I also changed the node where the lefthand and righthand lines join to a smooth point to give it a more fluid appearance

What program did you use to wrap the pattern?
When creating your lines how did you make sure that the lines intersected on the opposite ends of the pattern?
good ideas here.

Khalid ,
Actually the drawing is twice the width of the circumference of the material. My drawing width is 2 x Pi x D so it wraps twice around the column.

It looks like James wrapped the grape vine once around the column so his drawing width would be the same as his column circumference.

Hey James...does your chest pop out a bit from pride when you make something that turns out nice like that?
How long did that take for you to make?

Randall,
Since you have 50 dollar bills laying around, I'll be glad to take them off your hands. ;)

Oh, some nice work too.
