Slowly plowing through details of my new book - still many months from a finished product and was wondering. If I just say CNC, do people understand that to mean CNC Router in the woodcrafting/creative communities or do I need to be specific and say both words?

For instance, a laser cutter is a CNC but rarely have I seen it referred as such - usually just laser or laser cutter.

What do you think?

I would refer to it initially as "CNC flatbed router table". CNC by itself can relate to many, many things, such as lathes, presses and drilling machines.

Thanks for your reply Mark, it would have renders of wooden toys on the cover and description explaining the details but your point very well taken - something I have to be careful about for sure! Thanks for your reply - I think "CNC flatbed router table" will have to absolutely be in the description.

95% of people do not know anything about production machinery

Well thank you sir. I have checked out your web site and find your designs, work and imagination equally amazing! I love the castle. I love all of it! Let us know when your book comes out, please.

Agreed Gene - but I still want to be as accurate in my description of what the book holds.

There won't be any new models in there that weren't in my earlier books (most likely), just redesigned and optimized ones based off my earlier laser designs specifically for CNC. Still a tremendous amount of work and showing people who are familiar with one or both technologies how the "same" designs are modified will bring both of the site's designs on an even keel. Then all new stuff in volume 5 for both CNC and Laser (maybe 3D printers too!). There will be lots of other stuff in there too - I want it to be the end-all-be-all for anybody interested in CNC'ing (beginner and advanced levels of experience) so this will be a massive book.

When talking to people with no knowledge, or experience I use the term, computer controlled router.

I call it a CNC router, if I know the person is likely to understand what CNC equipment is.

yes....

so in the preface...

my idea would be...

Hi Jon,
I know you didn't ask this and i don't want to be your book editor but i do have a question as to whether you will cover this since you do both the laser and cnc.

How do you deal with the differences of what a laser can do that a cnc can't, specifically a laser can cut square inside and outside corners whereas a cnc can't (inside corners) and how do you deal with that in your designs?

Just thought i'd throw that at you buddy:eek:

I just started working as an instructor in a TechShop style collaborative space. We have 9 CNC machines. 3 lasers (not usualy refered to as such) but also a 4x8 Viccam router, an Anvil prototyper, a Tormach mill, a Guahong lathe, a reel quilting machine, and a CNC embroidery machine. I keep getting questions as to when I will offer a class on the lathe. As such, I have started calling myself the CNC router guy.

hope that helps.

"CNC Router", for sure.

Anything else is like asking someone if they like sandwiches.
Peanut butter & Jelly ? Bologna ? Egg, maybe ?

Then again, I know nothing of your proposed book, its purpose or target audience.

@ Jack,
Yup, happier than a pig in the stink, pretty amazing. Quite honestly, I havent even begun to touch the possibilities. The biggest problem is remembering to keep focus on my own projects in the pipeline.

There are so many damn toys around.
