Kinect to scan an object

I have been playing around and reading some of the kinect forums and there are a few apps to scan an object and turn it into a STL see:
http://wiki.ultimaker.com/Kinect_2_STL and others and wondered if anyone has had any experience with a kinect module?
The question i have is...I "borrowed" my grandsons kinect module and wanted to plug it into my pc to try some of the various things but it seems to have a slightly larger USB plug on it that won't fit into my USB ports on my PC and wondered if maybe my ports are not correct or if there is an adapter or how others are accomplishing this?:confused:

Vectric have done a lot of work with them - http://www.vectric.org/labs/

The general opinion is that the resolution from the Kinect is far too low to be of any real use to most people though. It only needs to scan human sized objects after all.

I think i had read that article in the past but what i'm confused about is the physical hookup directly to the pc. If you look at the pic they are definitely different types of plugs. I have a scsi adapter for my laptop but i don't think it is that:confused:

You need the older type of Kinect with a separate power supply as I understand it to work with the PC.

Googled Kinect ports...

"The special port is "actually a special Kinect port that handles both data and power for the new motion control system." What this means is that if you still have an original Xbox 360 (like, well, most of us) you will have to find an extra spot in your surge protector to power the Kinect as well as freeing up a regular USB port on your system."

You will need the power supply. http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msstore/en_US/list/catID.50606600/parentCategoryID.50790100/categoryID.57399200 . This power supply was once included when you bought the senor. It is included if you buy the Kinect for Windows.
