WHen I got my Shopbot, I bought the starter bit set as well and have been using the 60 degree, 1" V bit for all my projects so far.

I was looking at some different angles of V bits, from a supplier of mine here in Canada - they have two carbide cutters that can be replaced (I have a lot of indexed carbide tooling for my shaper, and like the system).

Has anyone used these types of bits for signs and other V carving stuff? Im thinking the shallower angled ones might be nice to do a faux raised panel in MDF for painted doors.

This is the style I am referring to:

the amana bits are way too expensive. unless you are cutting a lot with them the replaceable cutter v bits are pretty expensive to use. the others may cost 5.00 or so to have sharpened. Her sef is the way to go if you want replaceable cutters.

I use the hersaf bits everyday and like them! The 60v and 90v are my most used ones.

I am not buying the Amana brand, just pulled up the picture as the company I deal with here in Canada doesnt have the photos on their website.

But all the insert style bits look the same. Just wanted to make sure I was clear in what I was talking about..

Steve, no one anywhere near me sharpens bits. I have gone towards insert tooling for that reason, in my shaper cutters and even my planer and jointer heads.

Well, I ordered two bits on Monday, they are in at the local shop. Going to pick them up tomorrow. I purchased Dimar brand bits. Tried two (60 and 90 degree). Will hopefully get to try them out Monday, if not this weekend, and report back. These are single cutter bits by the way.

Although the big brazed carbide (1" diam 60 degree) bit I got from Onsrud (in the starter set) works UK it leaves a fuzzy edge.

Well, I tried the 60 degree bit today... it works really well!

The 90 degree actually has two cutting edges, so you get twice the life per insert. The 60 degree is not symmetrical. But, I think the inserts were $16 and $20.

They have a wide range of degrees available, I think later on I will try a few shallower agled ones for faux raised panels and similar.
