My PC router that i bought new when i bought my shopbot in 2006 just bit the dust tonite. The last few times i turned it on i had to give it a tap on the side before it would spin up and i mentioned something previously about it looking like it was slowing down.
Well tonite i was working on a small sign and two letters before it was finished it started spitting and sputtering and no matter how much i begged her to please keep going till I was finished she just was being obstinate!

Please! Baby Please! But to no avail....she left me there to do "the Penguin":D

Well i bookmarked a tutorial previously from somewhere about replacing the brushes and have that but don't have a good link to but the brushes and thought someone might have a good source. I was going to try Amazon unless someone had a better source.
(does anyone understand the penguin reference?)

Jack,
Sorry to hear the router quit without finishing the job.
No I don't get the penguin reference.

I think you should use this as an excuse to call up ShopBot on monday, and order a new 5HP Columbo Spindle, as a replacement.

When I replaced my brushes and bearings on my Porter Cable, I got them from DeWalt factory service in Addison IL. There may be a closer location near you.

mine did not last two years. before i knew better i use to run my router at higher rpms. now it is either 13k or 16k. the brushes are cheap, over night shipping is not, so i bought two pair. as i recall the brushes were 1 inch long and the old ones that came out were .25 of an inch. once in the router was like new again. mine i believe were ordered from dewalt service.

$2.96 :) This is my model router so make sure you look yours up. I've delt with them before and standard shipping was fast.

one saving grace was that i had another replacement router sitting there for the last few years waiting for its turn to be "put in the game". Now that it's the "starting quarterback" I think i'll name him Tim Tebow:D

So i can order some new brushes and it won't matter if it takes a week to get here.

If the router spins freely by hand, you may only need brushes.
If it's difficult to spin by hand then the bearings may be messed up too.
Then again, if it's spins so freely that it wobbles, you probably got a bearing problem.

I don't remember how or why I determined my bearings went bad - it may have been the sound when it was running - so I replaced them along with the brushes. One of the bearings had to be pushed out with a hydraulic press...

One thing that kept mine running before it totally died was to use the air hose through the slots while it was on. Blowing out the dust and foam helped the brushes make contact.

That sounds like a good idea.....should i tell them to put it on your account? I honestly wouldn't want the problems and maintainence of a spindle. Besides if a router lasts me 6 years i probably will only need a couple more before my "motor" gives out.....

I have done this once so that makes me an expert, yeah rite. I forget what they are called but there is a sleeve that can be ordered at the same time. I assume that the sleeve is meant for insulation? the sleeve somewhat wraps or folds around the brushes. Anyhow they too are cheep. When i took out the old sleeves i determined that they were still in good shape so i left them in there. so based on my one experience i am not absolutely sure that the new sleeves are necessary just something to consider.
