I have carved and cut plenty of MDF but never for kitchen cabinet doors. My question is, how is the best way to attach hinges? Will a typical hinge screw into the face of it and hold ok or is there a particular type of hinge that is best for this?
Someone wants me to redo their kitchen cabinet faces and i was also thinking it might be easier to buy plain premade cabinet doors and carve them here. I like the straightness of MDf but hate to cut or carve it due to the nasty dust.

Any recommendations on a door supplier? What is a good cost for a average door (so i will know whether i'm overpaying)?

The best way to hang MDF doors is with European style cup hinges.

Barring that, an Amerock style will work fine if the screws are going through the face. MDF has decent holding power for screws on the face, not so much on the edges.

Drill pilot holes, and if you have a choice, use deep threaded screws.

I would never rout my own MDF doors when they are so affordable to purchase. I get them locally from US Customized Finishes (http://www.uscustomized.com/), they ship all over the country but there may be another supplier closer to you. You can order them sanded and primed and save yourself a lot of time, work and MDF dust.

You would have to contact them for pricing as I'm not sure what discount they would offer you.

Jack,
If doors are inset and you need screw fastening capability on edge of MDF, it can be done. Here is the unusual combination of hinge and screw:
-No mortise hinge (I've ordered from Lee Valley)
-1.5" trim head screw (the black ones w/#1 square drive)

Not made to go together, but the head on that screw will seat close enough to flush to work.

Key to making it work: DRILL 1/8" PILOT HOLE FULL DEPTH OF SCREW.

All seems a bit counterintuitive, but it does work.
