I've been scratching my head over inconsistent 'chattering' for over a year. Sometimes the cuts were almost perfect and other times they looked awful. Figuring that either the entire frame was flexing or that one or more of the rollers wasn't doing its job, I finally got a Sharpie Permanent Marker and drew a line across each of the V-rollers so that I could visually verify that the rollers were turning as the axes moved. To my surprise, one roller on the Y-carriage only turned part of the time. With the carriage near the home position, the roller was tight against the rail, but near the middle of the carriage's travel, although the roller was still lightly touching the rail, I could easily turn the roller by hand. After tightening things up properly, the machine runs with almost no 'chatter'.
