I can go to places like rocklers and others for things like barrel hinges but I don't know if those are the best prices and wondered those of you who make boxes and stuff like that where you buy your supplies at good prices?

Grainger - http://www.grainger.com
McMaster Carr - http://www.mcmaster.com
Spokane Hardware - http://www.spokane-hardware.com/

These are all wholesale places.

Rockler and Woodcraft are for the hobby woodworker and they charge very high retail prices for items (I've seen as high as 120% above retail pricing). When you see something "on sale" at retail locations, they have brought prices down to about 20-40% (or more) above wholesale. I realize they have to make a profit to keep their doors open and I respect that. But when you do woodworking for a living you just can't pay retail pricing for things and intend to stay in business very long. There is no room for markup on our part if we had to pay retail.

this is exactly why i ask advice because rockler charges $12+ and grainger has them for $4.50 quite a difference. I appreciate your help:)

Now let me ask what you might think is a dumb question simply because i've never used barrel hinges...

The lip or wall of my box is .75 thick, do i install barrel hinges straight down into the lip of the box and the lip of the lid or on the back wall of the box and the back wall of the lid?

FYI:
Amazon.com has 1/2" ones for $1.99 each

is this a good one for my application?

It doesn't matter who you buy a Soss hinge from. It is still a Soss hinge.
Amazon= 1.99 + 8.99 shipping. Those hinges are fine for a box as long as the sidewalls and lid are thick enough.

Here is a good source for barrel hinges. They are Soss and they have price breaks for larger orders.

Dave...that was the first thing i thought $1.99+8.99 and i input out of curiosity quantity of 10 and it was the same shipping price, so less then $30.00 for 10 with shipping.

is that good or bad?

I haven't ordered from these guys yet, but the prices are little short of amazing. I'll try them on my next hinge order. Barrel hinge $.60

Donn

Those are good prices but this type barrel hinge requires a back bevel where the more expensive Soss doesn't.
