Either they sent the wrong thing or i ordered the wrong thing..(probably the latter!) anyway those of you who know about these hinges can you advise me as to the specific one to buy based on the chart below and the dimensions of my box?
My box is 12"wide x 9.5" deep. The wall thickness of box itself is .75"
the lid (is not cut or carved yet) but it was going to be of 1" thick walnut and i was going to hog out some of the depth in the underside of the lid to make it lighter so i would have also a .75 thick wall for the lid.

What i got was these tiny hinges that will not work. If you look at the chart, what thickness of material do i need to leave around the hinge hole to keep the bottom of it (the material between the bottom of the lid and the top of the box) from blowing out (letter D in the illustration?)

According to the chart I think i need item BH 144?
The woman on the phone was not much help because she wanted to speak in millimeters which i can't do the comparison on the fly so i was confused.

Although i ordered on the 5th and got them on the 7th so it was good service.
Or if you have advice on a better type hinge altogether? I'd rather not go with just a regular Butt hinge:eek:

(Hey Bevis...he said BUTT hinge...hehe, hehe! I am Cornholio!):p

Here is a couple of links to more information on barrel hinges

Rockler web site recommends 14mm for 3/4" wood.

I use the 10mm ones on bigger boxes I use 3 they are quite tough, thye have a small locking screw in both tops when open to lock them..

The BH144's will be the strongest as long as you are very careful drilling.
The 10mm are also OK for a small box with a 3/4" wall but aren't as strong.

I bought the 8 mm hinge for boxes with 1/2" of wood left around the box. They need to be drilled very close to the back or the box won't open all the way. I tested mine on 2 flat pieces of wood until I got them just right. The hole diameter and depth is really picky but when you get them right they are easy to assemble and work well. They have a tiny screw that needs to be tightened when you install them. I read that some people use a drop of super glue but I haven't tried that. By the way I do the hinge holes before hogging out the box.
