I was trying to come up with a way to do scrimshaw on a powder horn (cow horn) which has a curved surface.
I found a spring loaded engraving tool for a cnc machine. Looks interesting wonder if anyone has use one similar to this for engraving on a curved surface. Here is the link:

examples of some curved surface work:

you can get it laser scanned and import. Add your work to the project. Not the cheapest way but I would say it would be fairly safe. You can make a good cradle to hold the horn from the negative space. Then you know exactly where your part is for the engraving.

I have one and it works well. I have not really tried it on curves I have used it on parts who were not level with each other.

Thank you Steve and Joe for your input. I think I may try the spring-loaded bit first. If I have the horn laser scanned I would have to get it exactly positioned when I do the etching and I am afraid it maybe difficult to get it exactly repositioned. The other option is to use the probe to taken measurements of the surface curvature and do not remove the horn and replace the bit and etch the horn. The is all new territory for me. Thanks again.

Creating a cradle from the scanned 3d object is to deal with positioning. :) Its only purpose in life is to hold the horn to be engraved. And it would fit perfectly.
