Another Textured Panel Help Request

I would really like to make some 4x8 panels covered in the kind of textures seen in this ShopBot promo photo.

I know that there are a dozen ways of going about this process but I'm hoping someone can show me a quick tutorial for recreating the texture shown at the top right. I have access to an Alpha, Aspire, Cut3D, and Cut2D via TechShop.

I have seen tutorials for doing this in Rhino but I'm hoping there's an easier way.

If I get my real work done :) I will post a tutorial for this tonight.:cool: If you are using something other than Aspire 2.5 some of the buttons and stuff will be different. I think that you will 'get it' :D

When making panels like those, do you have to do anything to the back of the panel to keep it from cupping or warping?

And would this vary depending on if the material is MDF or urethane foam?

MDF varies widely and the cupping is definitely a recurring phenomenon. The more inconsistent the MDF's density throughout the panel, the more tendency to warp it has. Naturally it's best to find an MDF source that doesn't cup very badly so you don't have to do any more than is necessary to keep it flat. Flakeboard Premier is excellent. We used some MDF while we were at IWF that was from Horizon Forest Products that seemed to be quite good - I think it may have actually been a low density MDF but it was very consistent. The urethane foams I have machined on had very consistent density throughout and I did not notice a tendency to warp. In the interest of full disclosure I have not made any textured panels from urethane foam. While it may not have a cupping problem it does have a $150/sheet problem.

I have seen some samples from other companies. That stuff was 1/2" MDF laminated to 1/2" plywood. That seemed like a pretty damn good idea to me.

Mounting is a concern for me. I'm leaning towards simply mounting to the drywall in my house with Liquid Nails... That does have a small problem of being hilariously permanent...

I think I will make these panels for the mid atlantic bot gathering at Angus' shop. Anyone interested in seeing them?

150.00 per sheet, 4 x 8 (150/32 = 4.68 ) i get 35.00 finishd and installed. 32 x = 35.00 =1120.00 per sheet,


Charge a bit less for 1" hdf 3/4" mdf, yet always lay up a phenolic backer on sheet, just a few bucks yet no warp !!

Phenolic backer eh? That sounds like a good solution - what type of phenolic do you use and in what thickness, if you don't mind my asking?

backer sheet is common in military and architectural specs and offsets the warp when a sheet is unbalanced

we have also done it as simple as spraying laquer on the back !

Might take a couple of passes depending on spindle/router capabilitys, most of my coolest ones are a 2" ballnose bit,
