I had to reproduce some architectural column tops, the original had been done by hand it was black walnut stained an almost mahogany color.

So I drew it up machined what I could and did the rest by hand, the top 3d carving I just pocketed to give me a reference I used carbide burs in a die grinder for major removal and dremels with diamond bits for the finishing work.

The v carving was also touched up with my carving chisels to remove that perfect machined look

One of my major concerns was possible blotching of the stain but the Campbell wood conditioner applied before staining worked well.

The one in the middle is the original.

Interesting job I hope to get more

Fabulous! By the final photo, I can't tell which is the original.

Wow Brian, those are some great looking newel posts! Are those posts solid, or are they hollow? Chuck

PS: I greatly appreciated your video showing how you used your Shopbot to make chairs!

I don't think you could have gotten it much closer to an exact match on the carving and the finish is fantastic:eek:

Thanks for the kind comments, now I cant leave the house my heads too big.

Chuck they are glued up the face is a piece of 8/4 with sides glued and a filler block on top they fit around some cleats on the wall from what I understand.

I have not been to the actual job site, just got asked to make them.

Really interesting

The original craftsman worked/studied for years to be able to produce that carving very exactly.

In our day we have to do some handwork because the carving is just too exact

Either way the result is beautiful

Outstanding Job

I've only had one chance to do some real duplication work like that. Problem was the price. They hung up on me and didn't bother picking up their sample once i gave them the estimate.

Randy
