Carrying on from Jacks posting on gears here is a project that could last all winter! The website is in Hebrew but excellent pics and good videos and it uses the gear program.

Oh my.. a mechanical encoder for 7 segment displays.
The old 74xx47 does the same job for $3.08 each in single quantity, and $0.34 each in bulk. Interesting idea though, I'm sure other people look at my designs and say its easier and cheaper to XYZ..
Speaking of low level logic- there is a 12 lecture course for FREE that teaches how to design an entire computer from SCRATCH. Its called "nand to tetris". The course can be completed in 12 weeks. It will change your view on computing forever.

Be prepared to spend a lot of time to study all the material in depth, but its being taught as computers 101- the intro course, in some colleges now. Almost everything about computers makes sense when you understand all levels of computing.
