When i set up my bot i had the 220 line running from the circuit breaker to the control box and that also had a power line that i wired my electrical power for my router into. I also ran a separate extension cord with constant power on in case i needed to run the router without running a file.

Today i set up a file to run started it up, router would not run, no power seems to be going to it from the box.
So i tried plugging it in the constant power....no power to that line now either.

So what the heck is going on? Well i thought about it and the only thing i have done differently lately was that i drilled a hole in the side of the building and ran a line in from a light i installed in the "cat hotel" my granddaughter and i built that was attached to a remote control/auto on/off switch. I had it plugged in "upstream" of where i had the extension cord plugged in for the power to the router. When it was plugged in and the power was off to the switch it was not letting power flow past the on/off switch.

When i unplugged it i got power back. It would seem to me that the on/off switch should not terminate the flow from the rest of the line but only out to the light that is plugged into it right?

I guess that depends on how it is wired. We'd need to see a wiring diagram, photos, or something.

Did you just install the switch as well? I don't entirely understand the situation from your description.

what you might have done was to wire the light in sequence with the plugs . What you should have done is to tie a black wire ,white wire, and ground coming off of the plug line to a switch ( breaking the black wire only) and then going to the cat house heater

The way the outlets were originally wired is this..if you are holding an outlet with the plugin face toward you you have 2 screws on left side, 2 screws on right side. If i remember correctly, since it's been about 10 years ago, i attached 2 whites on the silver, and 2 blacks on the gold with grounds on the green.

So they should be wired in "series" with each other...or is that "parallel"?

The on/off switch i bought is just something you plug into an outlet, nothing you hardwire into the building. So what was happening is when the switch on the timer was turned off and it was plugged into the outlet, it was not allowing current to flow past that outlet. The switch has it's own outlet that you plug your light into that is turned off and on.

If current was able to 'flow past the outlet' before the switch was plugged in, then plugging in the switch should not have been able to stop that from happening. The two black wires on one side of the receptacle would be an incoming 'hot' wire and and outgoing wire leading to the next receptacle. Same with the two white wires.

Very curious indeed. There must be more to the story.

David i think there is more to the story, i just haven't figured it out because even after i took the on/off switch out of the equation i'm still having problems. I'm going to take my trusty little power plug thingamabob and go into the circuit box and check further. It could be that things happened coincidentally at the same time just to screw with my head!

if it is a switch outlet combo there is a different way to wire one of these . I can remember that i had a issue with one of these years ago but i forgot what i did to correct it:eek: its no fun getting old:mad:
