More specifically on the indexer...

I used to like to do woodturning and segmented turning but can no longer do it because of my arthritis. Well i'm always trying to think of new designs and stuff so why couldn't you make say a table leg or column or bowl using this method described in this video that when you glue them up you could then put it on your indexer and (assuming your pieces are thick enough) glue them together. When the segments are glued together it creates your square holes.

Then put it on your indexer and carve your profile into it. How to make the tool is explained in the video at the end. It basically is a centering jig for segmented turning.
But i can see how you could make a hollow vase with different species rings similar to the pic i have here. I made no attempt to line rings up for purposes of this picture. The square holes i was going for in the other rings was a failure.

As i was writing this i came up with another idea. After watching the video this will make more sense....
Here is and idea i stopped thinking about in favor of another....wax inserts

Here is my brainstorm...
start off with a square 1.25 thick
segment a circle and square like you see in pic 1

select the vectors for the pink segments and pocket those away (all down to 1.125 leaving a .125 base to hold segments together)

optionally select the vectors for the green segment and pocket those away

select the blue center vectors and pocket those away

you will be left with 3 segments (yellow) on a .125 base

repeat the process for as many layers as you want and then when you go to glue them up you can rotate each layer by one segment thereby making your square holes.

Then take each layer and glue on top of each other. You may want to adjust your thickness of layers to account for the .125 base and have equal thickness layers.

The idea here is now that you have your layers glued up, the center is cut out of your (vase, column, whatever) you make it.

you now have square holes in whatever pattern you glue it up in

assuming you made your segments thick enough you can take it over to your indexer and carve your profile into it.

Keep in mind all i did was draw this up in my paint program and try to visualize it in my head so you may want to adjust the size and number of your segments, so it has not been tried.

It was just what i came up with after watching that video and thought, how could i make segments, attached, with square holes....that's what i came up with. If you see flaws or a better way to do this let me know.:D

you could even put a tapered edge on the inside of the segments (by blue pocket) to make a curved inside to your vase...
