It is a foam board that is 4'x8'x2.75" thick and it looks like it was probably used as some type of stage because it has a nonslip surface on one side. It is similar to signfoam, a bit more brittle but way more solid then styrofoam.
I want to use it for insulation but also to do some carving on. I am going to make a file and take it out and carve it real quick to see how it machines. I can buy 35 sheets but i'd like to get a idea of what a good price for this would be?

Looks like cyanoacrylate insulation. Aside from actually using it for insulation or dunnage, it is worth next to nothing. It doesn't machine very well - that is to say, it doesn't hold a good edge.

here is what it looks like carved. It feels like regular blue/pink foam. I tried to peel some of the backing off where it didn't carve is the reason his nose is torn off.
Can you tell what the difference between this and the blue/pink foam would be?
Is it worth $10.00 for a 4'x8'x2.75" sheet of this stuff?

Jack,
Where I live 1" pink or blue styrofoam 2' x 8' is about $25.00 (inc. government). Notice I said 1" x two feet x 8". By looking at your pictures, the pink and blue route way better than the stuff you have got. What is that stuff? Formaldehyde or asbestos????? I would route that with caution.

I'm not even going to ASK where you'd get the main course for THAT one Jack!

It looks like a brick pattern R-Board I've used it before to put around basement walls that were out of the ground to far because of ground water issues has to be pained with really good paint and lasts a long time it has fiberglass in it and makes you itch and and the dust really plugs you up At least that's what it looks like from your pics

I recently bought two 4 x 8 pieces of that exact stuff (mine had that cardboard or whatever it is on both sides though). I paid $40 each.
It is for insulating flat roofs; I got it at a roofing supply company. I got it (and cut it on the bot) to make a new foam insulating cover for my outdoor hot tub. I cut all the way thru it and did not try to carve it. I'm still working on the cover as I have to machine some fiberglass hinges and then glass them to the foam. I'll probably rhino-line the whole thing when done (using the cheaper DIY rhino lining stuff).

I tried to get them to sell it all to me for $5.00/sheet but they are sticking tight to $10.00/sheet. I will probably go buy 5 to 10 sheets because one thing i need to make is a 4'x4'x4' box out of plywood to hold a 300 gallon water tank that i'll use this to insulate because it needs to be outside (couldn't get it inside the door). It's for my solar water heating system.

I use a propane torch and black spray paint to make castle walls that's all I use it for.
