puzzle joints

I am building 18 mahogany exterior benches. I am trying to use the bot as much as possible. In place of using traditional mortise and tennon joints I was thinking of lapping in strechers and arms into the legs with a type of puzzle joint. I would use marine epoxy for the joints. Has anyone tried this?
