this would be a good solution to scan 2d stuff.

Steve,
I didn't go look at the programs linked in the video but i would think you could make this work for a shopbot. The mach3 is for movement of the carriage and the scan software is for capturing of data. Now if it was written to be controlled thru mach3 it may not work.
I think this would be way faster then the shopbot probe.

Very interesting.....
So any reason why you can't load Mach3 on the control PC, use it for scanning and then import the resulting DXF to Aspire / Partworks, CAM it and run it through SB3 to cut the part?
My understanding is that Mach3 works with Shopbots.....is that right?

Very neat indeed - would really be useful for reverse-engineering applications... sure beats using a ruler!

For capturing the flat plane, on a small part like he shows (or up to legal paper size) couldnt you just lay it on a desktop document scanner and get the same or better results? I am probably missing something regarding how he focused the camera on the plane he wanted to scan - which you couldnt do on a desktop scanner.

This is appropriate for smaller parts, like the one shown in the video. However, the SB probe in 2D mode would run circles around it. Also, a flatbed scanner would do this in a fraction of the time as well...If you watch the video and get how many pics are in that 'scan' you would quickly see that it would take forever to digitize larger panels unless you had a camera with a much wider field of view.
