Yes it can. Watch the reduction ratio...make sure it is high enough to get the resolution you need. If you have an Alpha, you will also need a power supply just for that axis, in addition to (and if you have a Standard) needing a motor driver and cable.

How would it hook in the control box ? i have a alpha Or would it be alot less headache to go with a shopbot indexer

Cost is all relative. If you are not into hacking, wiring and doing the research necessary to add that to your system, then it is cheaper to just buy the SB one. Yes, it can certainly be done, but I am not certain that it would really save you that much in the long run.
