I have a local client who makes post hole diggers. He had a pre-existing sign design and sent it to me. I was amazed at how quickly I was able to convert it to a dimensional sign in Vectric Aspire. Using the vectors, I was able to build up the pieces and merge them with the bevel on the square easily. Creating the large bevel on the outside was a breeze.

Here it is carved in HDU on my shopbot:

Here's the thing: I just think it's too plain. It needs more dimension. What to do? How about some Rhino texture? The client loves the idea. So, a quick modification to my existing files and:

The holes are for some custom bolts that will look pretty cool when it's all painted.

How did you make the texture?

I found a decent resolution image of some skin...
and then imported the bitmap into Vectric. By converting it to a 3D shape, I could modify the depth/height until I thought it looked good. I used the vectors of the logo to erase the portion I didn't need.

Got it finished! You can read more about it at: www.haffnersigns.blogspot.com

Doug,
I love the sign and the quality is great and it's too late but what i would have suggested to your client would have been to either make the vertical line on the h or the lower curved part of the R to resemble a Rhino horn and the rhino skin addition was definitely a good addition....good job!:D

Thanks Jack!
I've found that once clients have an established logo, they are rarely interested in modifications...sometimes with color, but almost never with shape. Great ideas, though!
