hey all, we have a client that need etching on stainless steel, has anyone ever done this, if so what are the parameters used? thanks much...btw..its pretty small etching so i am thinking of using a v bit

Probably better off using the widgetworks diamond drag bit. It will do very good fine line engraving and the spring load will keep the pressure consistant without damaging it. Carbide v-tools are not made for stainless steel.

Visit www.precisebits.com and look at the engraving tools. You will need a .125 collet but these tools are made for this application. I sell allot of the 30 degree ones.

Lutchman,
a standard carbide tip is not recommended for stainless.
you can use any solid carbide engraving bit, however I would recommend a 60° since they have more mass at the point.
Do a quick test but you should find that engraving 10 to 15 thousands in a conventional direction will eliminate the rolled edge in the stainless
