I am trying to replicate some bronze plaques and looking for a way to create a textured background while leaving the wording raised and untextured. The cuts will be made with HDU. I have attached a photo of what I am attempting to do, any help would be appreciated.

I've also made some plaques like this. It's almost impossible to get the crispness of Bronze panels with a CNC. My best product came from PVC but then you have to deal with the beautiful bronze letters.

I made a good run at it for fun. I think it came out very well. Here is the 3D clipart (http://joesboats.com/sb/Bronze_Texture_Joe.zip)

The software to shrink the image really dorked it up. Open the clipart and look at the real deal.

Johnathon,

Have had some great success with out texturing the material by applying Modern Masters Metal Effects bronze paint. Prime with a quality acrylic paint. After that dries, apply first coat of the bronze paint somewhat heavy, stipple to cause peaks in the paint. Let it dry. Second coat, apply heavier and then stipple with a longer soft bristle brush. While this second coat is still wet, spray the patina acid. Let it dry over night. The next day you can buff the patina with a Scotchbrite pad to the look you desire. At one of the Shopbot Camps in Houston, Bill Palumbo saw this technique and stated; "Terry, you got this effect down". Below are examples of what it could look like.

This is a 4'x8' piece btw. :)

I've used Rustoleum's Hammered finish paints. It may not be quite there as far as detail, however.

Yup...Looks very similar to the posted pic.

The texture in the photo looks just like the resin splatter texture we used to spray on speakers before indoor/outdoor carpet took over the market... There was a name for it but it eludes me now. After spraying a base coat we turned the air way down and let the resin "spit" all over it.

It does. That's a great option.

Jonathan,,,, maybe this is no longer true.... but in the 1970s when I used to make speaker cabinets out of particle board, I would paint them with black latex paint. It produced a bumpy pattern similar to what you are seeking. Maybe current particle board does not react that way to latex paint. Chuck
