Went to the doctors yesterday and came home and the door was open, 40" flatscreen TV was gone, along with all the cash I've been saving for my best friends daughter for college. That was all they took, shopbot desktop and computer untouched. IDIOTS. Cops say desperate druggies looking for quick cash only. I live in the woods in Maine and have never locked my doors, Times Change. Glad they left the 'bot.

Glad they left your Bot too!

Maybe it's time to get yourself a fuzzy friend or two to watch your stuff while you are out.

Thieves really tick me off! They got a bunch of my cedar lumber recently. Worst part was not the cost of the lumber, it's that I'll be down 6 months while waiting for next batch to dry.

I just installed a cheap camera system from Harbor Fright and caught the kid across the street stealing change out of my truck the very next day. I too have never locked my doors. I'm gonna rethink that. When they start stealing lumber it may be time for you to do the same Ken!

Brady, My fuzzy friend is an 8 lb stray cat(I wondered why she hissed at me when I got back). Larger FUZZIES take ME for a walk nowadays, and in the old days hooking my Husky/Wolf on a 20' lead to go cross country skiing showed me how many squirrel/ rabbit tracks intersected the old narrow gauge railroad tracks I skiied on(Dog goes left of tree, one of my skiis goes left, one goes right, 2' maple in between,=OUCH!) Nice to hear from you again, things progressing. Ken, would have been Really p-ssed if they had taken the quilted maple from one tree in Oregon resting next to the front door. They were obviously not "wood ticks" as they left 3 billets of ebony untouched that were 2' away from the tv. More than annoying but could have been worse. They cut the 3mm perlon rope that held the tv on the stand and I just did a comparison on the cut with an 1 1/2" chisel I can shave the hair off my forearm with, and their cut was cleaner, and I hone that sucker.

Security cam good idea, anyone have motion sensor source they've used to shoot my drive. No neighbors within a 1/2 mile except one direction, would have loved to get a shot of their car. Not much traffic but my corner is known as "hunters corner" as They park in a little cut-off 50 M away to access 4,000 acres. I grant access to bow and blackpowder people , but the Bam,b,b,b,b,Bam people that shoot at sound spook me. My Dad, had dropped me off and called me back to check the Desktop status, 911 had dropped the connection, and as soon as he hung up, the locals called(our town is still Amped with cops because of ex Bush) And asked if the robbery was still in progress because I was on the phone with Dad. Spooky thought.

did you have the serial number of the tv. or can you get it from where you bought the tv. police can post that on their list that go to the pawn shops.. you might get it back. and they might get the ones that stole it.

If you look on e bay there are alot of security cameras on there . I have installed several ZMODO brand camera systems some 4 cameras and some 8 cameras . they have remote live views , different size hard drives and motion sensor as well as timed record settings . Very simple to set up and operate as well . alot better than harbor freight , i tried a harbor freight first then i purchased a good one . Also i remember someone on this site who uses a Dropcam that called them and allerted them that their shop was being broken into .

Sent the cops up into the "loft" (I never throw much away) and they got the box and serial#. Told me that was the best lead they had and they never get it. They also said" What is all that wood up there?" I said 8/4 cherry stiles . I think they think I'm crazy. There's other wood up there I haven't seen in 12 years, I suppose I should...................:)

I've got 20 cameras and 3 DVR recorders in the shop and store. Wood was taken from home place nearby which is kinda like Scott's and in the middle of nowhere and mile long single track driveway so pretty gutsy. Probably someone who knows us and our schedule. Locking the gate now which is a pain for us and may have to put up a game camera on the drive. Of course would have to lock that to the tree too!

Our house was broken into and my truck vandalized 5 years ago, we know who did it from my security camera, I put up Q see brand resolution is pretty good and night vision is OK.

The Idiot that broke in never noticed the cameras mounted under the eves.

I have some moultrie trail cameras in other strategic spots, this area has basically no crime but this was a loose cannon relative so it may happen again.

Game cam. better thought than full security, allthough did sleep with match pistol in case they had second thoughts.

Brian, BAD when it's someone you know. Obvious strangers in my case as they left all the carved gems alone. Could have been irreplaceable.

I hate thieves. I too live in the sticks and put up a game camera to find those bears and mountain lions. But it can also catch a picture of a thief assuming they walk around the house.

We got burglarized three weeks ago. The just took a camera and iPad, stuff, and didn't make a mess. Small favor but it could have been a lot worse. The reason I'm writing is three fold. First they used a 24 foot extension ladder to go in the second floor window. No alarm sensors up there on most older houses. Lock those ladders to something so at least they have to work harder.
Second the officers who came were pretty blunt in saying alarms won't really help, the perps have 15 minutes and they know it. Hiding things in plain site works far better. Time to make some of those nice built ins with easy to use hidden drawers and doors. A new product idea for some people that's really 200 years old
Lastly they said the video or motion sensor still cameras have become the best tools to capture these creeps before they prey on others in your neighborhood. They said just just got one local creep off the streets with a photo from a "deer stand" camera from Cabella sporting goods that caught him breaking in to a house. Hard to deny when they have a nice clear hi res photo

We have our whole house wired at every door and window, but, unless you have impact sensors the typical alarm won't go off if they break the window. Adding a couple motion sensors takes care of that unless you have pets running around. The cops are pretty quick in our neighborhood. The houses are fairly close together and an alarm scares off the sh---ts.
Regardless, there have been regular break-ins and burglaries all over the community. In every case their alarms were not set or they had unlocked doors. Most of those theives are pretty lazy. My next door neighbor had her car stolen the other week. She left the keys on a hook in the garage and took the dog for a walk with----yep;you got it-----the garage door wide open!
Note that lots of burglars come back after a few weeks to get stuff they missed the first time. That happened to us years ago. The first time the neighbors dog scared them off (he was a very mean shep), so the second time they used a different window. That was when I put in my first alarm system and now the wife won't live in a house without one.

Game cam. better thought than full security, allthough did sleep with match pistol in case they had second thoughts.
I use the game cameras on my hunting land to catch trespassers more than I do for game, the trick is to put them about 15' up a tree aiming down at a slight angle so they cannot see them I have caught quit a few trespassers this way.

What needs to be done to thieves is cut their hands off . several countries do this.

Scott if you have a smart phone and reliable broadband you can get your alarm system to send you an email the SECOND movement is detected. You the start phoning your neighbours. In Australia cameras that do this cost $49.00. The good thing is no wiring needed as all wireless on your network. More expensive set ups allow to stream video live. With our system we have two way audio so you can yell at the mongrels! Thieves are getting smarter and tend to defeat these systems by turning off the power. We had our main switches moved out of the main meter box and put on a sub board inside the workshop - one of the rare smart ideas we have! Fitting a solar panel to drive your laptop with a tractor battery makes your computer and modem tamper proof. Avoid signs saying video surveilence or bleeding obvious cameras. All this does is to make them conceal their faces. In one burglary in a holiday home they wrote on a white table cloth - please leave more money and grog for next time!!!!

Do you guys have Neighborhood Watch over there? Works really well here but best in areas with a fair few retirees.

Bob, only got broadband last year and last cellphone was a Motorola 3w bag phone($600-900 a month) in '98. So I've gone from hi-tech to way behind tech. No alarm system but did wire the house for everything from lasers to sound discriminators. I'm virtually always here, so they lucked out and I didn't, they hit a house 200 yds. down the street two weeks ago and just took flatscreens and apple stuff that was lying out. This is farm and forest with a 3 acre minimum lot and most people have twice that like me. All houses set back pretty much out of road sight. I think I'll have to live without as money is so tight( social security disability) I'll just lock doors and keep camera ready. may pick up game cam though. Thanks

I have a alarm system (35.00) per month. it is a silent system. Should some break in it calls the Police if it smells smoke It calls the fire department. If it detects co2 or other gases it call the fire department and the police. on break-ins It sets off two tear gas bombs that my security company says will fill the shop two times over. this goes off 10 minutes after the alarm goes off.

Most burglars are in and out in under 15 minutes. They says that the burglars will still be choking when the police arrive.

I have to call the security office when I spray lacquer or any other compound
I have had the table saw set it off when sawing some wood and had the fire department walk in..

Eugene, overkill for me. Allthough I did entertain various ideas involving percussion caps and smoke bombs for about an hour yesterday. Tear gas! My stray cat would never forgive me. All these high techs ideas like I used to have in my Bike shop (False alarms at least once a month) are great though. I think they might even keep a racoon from eating my cats food in the house like last year(the mama headed out the garage door but the baby got lost and wound up spending the rest of the night in the house, very vocal and cute when they're tiny, but mama left some very interesting scratches on the house trying to get back in) rambling

boobytraps...shotgun tied to the doorknob:eek:
Get a large german shepard or big barking dog. Alarms are useless because cops don't respond with any urgency.

I have reconsidered a live feed to smart phone system since this happened nearby. http://www.gazettetimes.com/news/local/remote-security-cam-mix-up-causes-burglar-scare/article_961abb12-20bd-11e3-b816-0019bb2963f4.html

Jack, don't you know LETHAL man traps are illegal? Now non-lethal? Hmmm. Going to have to watch "Home Alone" again when I get a new set, Wish I still had the 40" mitsubishi tube set, They would have had a hernia, but this one was a replacement for that one which died of "blue line"disease. like the boobytrap idea, keep my brain entertained for hours. Richard, too funny.

Because i'm caring for an elderly parent i installed several cameras inside while i went on a class reunion last year and family stayed with her and while i was traveling down the tracks by train i could log in and check things real time and converse with them and it had a HD recording.

But these camera systems are really meant to deal with the aftermath of a crime what you need is something that prevents the crime in the first place.

This thing i have is called a Novar 980. It s basically a 1000 watt intense light like a camera flash that blinds you and a loud auditory alarm that scares the **** out of you.

I had at least two in every one of my stores and they did more to prevent break-ins because back then when you had a regular alarm it triggered a dialer to call security company, they in turn called police, then police responded, so the crooks know they have at least 8-10 minutes. you can also plug something like a strobe light or other distraction that is triggered.

You set this, it gives you time to leave then if there is any noise it goes off and can wake the dead. The only problem is if you forget that it is armed and you walk in....well lets just say it's best to have a spare pair of shorts on hand!
