This guy wants to trade me these clamshell cabinets with matching bases. What do you think they are worth in their present state, and what would they be worth if they were stripped down and refinished?

It all depends on whether you call them clamshell cabinets or scallop shell niche cabinets/bookshelves
In Philly, it's worth $50 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jLo7tHDHgOc&feature=youtu.be&t=48s) :D:D:D

In Cape May NJ they're worth a decent amount if you could find the rite buyer. It's a Victorian town and they eat this stuff up. It really comes down to finding the rite person with the need and the pocketbook to match. Keep in mind someone will have to sit on them till they find the right buyer. And yes, I do watch a lot of Pawn Stars!
its worth the maxium that you can get someone to pay you ! I stopped buying things like this because i never get around to finding a buyer and then its beat up and i have to store it and its always in the way and i have to move it and stuff gets spilled on it or piled o top of it , get my drift ...

Gene R,
I know what you mean. I have taken "freebies" with the intent of fixing them up only to have them crowd the shop until I give them away because i never get to it.
Kurt i'll ask about the doors i hadn't noticed to look till you pointed that out. I haven't seen them in person yet, they looked like corner units and i figured a bookshelf butted up against them.

Yuck not my style at all, way to much poofy stuff for lack of a better description, putting the time into refinishing and finding someone with a gaudy house is not worth it.

Jack, I think the best thing you could do with these is to take more pictures and admire then study their design.
These were once high-end pieces. But as antiques they lost much of their value due to the slopped on paint. And since the start of the Great Recession, their value was slashed even more. These pieces are only worth 1/2 to 1/4 of what they were worth in 2006.
The pictures of these once elegant shelves won't clutter up your shop! Chuck

those really rock. The question is what material are they made from, what year are they from and how mcuh work would go into them to make them ready to reinstall....? I have seen similar corners done from basswood with 12/4 cabinet fronts below from ??? mahongany??? ..... these could be as stunning.
