A single use, throwaway mat? That'll get expensive!

if that's how u plan to use it as single use throw away. I make two sided plaques with standardized wood blanks. a dedicated jig will only cut material once or minimally on outsides after first pass. I still trying to find cost of vac mat material. chances are it is cost prohibitive. I have a vacuum jig already for my parts... it does reduce my z by more than I like, but it works.

I just thought this was a pretty smart solution to a very common problem

It's expensive when you include shipping from Germany...

Why not try using the Vacuum Film Technique ?

It amazes me that as this has been around since 1994 that there are no "me toos" out there yet as its such a brilliant system. That thinning down the aircraft wing was simply amazing stuff. I suppose the secret is the 10 thou holes?

That is an interesting concept. The small 0.010" vacuum holes apparently do not present enough leakage to cause failure. They said they had a holding weight of 12 PSI in that application. I guess they had a pretty good pump rate to work reliably.

why not use old rubber inner tubes cut open and stretched and punched with hole. or a rubber mat

...because it won't work. There's more to it than meets the eye. It's an ingenious solution no doubt, but not cost effective unless you really need it. You can get the same kind of performance using other techniques for less money.

BTW, making aircraft components is expensive business. If you have been involved in aviation you quickly realise how expensive manufacture of aircraft parts is. In the video they show aircraft component manufacture that would run into hundreds of thousands of dollar contracts.......the cost of the hold down device would be relatively inexpensive if not insignificant.

Economies of scale!
