“Making Fly Fishing Rods – Much More than a Stick with String”

with Joe Byrd

Tuesday, November 12th, 6:30-9:00 pm At the Johnson City Woodcraft

Radio personality and sportsman Joe Byrd fell in love with fly fishing in 1993. He took his love to new levels in 1998 when he began a journey to learn to make the precision instruments that are fly fishing rods. What begins as a 2 1/2 inch diameter, 12-foot long piece of bamboo is slowly worked down to a fly rod that weighs under 4 1/2 ounces.
He labored under a self-imposed apprenticeship, learning from other rodmakers all across the country for the first five years. Finally he reached a point where he started offering rods for sale in 2003. According to some of his customers, Byrd's handiwork can astound even the most ardent fly-fisherman. Each piece requires up to 70 hours of work, not including the personal imprint.
Now we have a chance to see what it really takes to make a fly rod that is able to land the big one. Everyone is welcome to attend this meeting.
There is still space in the Windsor Chair Class. Don't miss this opptunity to learn from Michael Harrel and make a beautiful continuous arm chair on Nov. 15-17.
