Think this one will work? It'll fit in the spindle easy enough but will the pen itself be blocked by anything?

Open to any other recommendations, the widget works pen holder on the SB store looks nice enough but I want something I can put my own pens into.

Weston, Just looking at it, I would say it would hit your dust skirt on the hose side if it swivels(1.4" from bottom of collet nut to bottom of Desktop dust skirt). If you need thin line cut pen down somehow or contact widgetworks and see if they offer thinline. here is thickline link.http://www.widgetworksunlimited.com/CNC_Plotter_Pen_Bit_Thick_Line_p/cnc-pltr_pen_thick.htm

You can get fineliner pen refills (http://www.goldspot.com/prodView.cfm?partno=G621BK)from Monteverde with built-in spring loaded tip.

Since they are a bit long I clipped them to the z-plate. The actual spring stroke is however short, maybe 2 mm.

I made a really simple pen holder that mounts to the dust shoe bracket.

The first picture is of the first generation holder. The other two are from when I realized that I had a lathe and could make it to fit in the collet.

All I did was cut off part of a ball point pen, and reverse the spring. this gives it about a quarter inch of spring.

The hole in the wood is stepped first to fit the body of the pen, then just big enough for the ink insert. That step is what the spring rests against and gives it its pressure. Super glue the body in and you're done.
