View Full Version : Need a pot rack design...

My kids gave me a set of pots and pans for Christmas... Yes, I do most of the cooking around here as my wife still works full time. My issue is that I need a pot rack... I’m tired of crawling on my hands and knees to search in the dark abyss of a base cabinet for the pan I want... I went to HD to pick up galvanized iron pipe to assemble what I envisioned as the perfect solution to my situation. I assembled it on the floor in the store making compromises on the fly based on the stock of parts they had on hand. In the end I restocked all the parts.
My question is:
Have any of you designed a nice pot rack to go with your cabinets lately? I envision my solution as hanging from the ceiling and being configured as a right angle 32” on each side.
Thanks for any ideas, pointers or suggestions!

Google Images search. I am sure there are a gazillion examples of them in a myriad of materials and finishes. Go get some ideas.

Brady...
I have already done as you suggested... Some of the guys here are in kitchens everyday and see the latest and greatest. I was hoping for some “novel” approaches to the solution. Especially wood ones that can be produced on the bot...

Steve,
I solve this problem for customers by either using all drawers in a base cabinet or trays behind doors. Open the doors, pull out the trays and your pots and pans are right there.
In the home market, this is called aging in place design.
I suspect with your skills and knowledge, you could put the some extension pull out trays in your base cabinets without to much trouble.

I did like Don said and stuck fry's and misc, under 6 burner recessed Z Russel Range in granite. Stockpots live under Blum hardware 18" cutting board, and bakeware under double ovens. Neater kitchen, cleaner line, but in a wheelchair SOOO. Have seen good stuff on Google like Brady says(if I were a stand up guy) but 12' ceilings would have made it weird looking. ceiling above stove discolored from Wok, Stainless is a pain to keep spotless, and taking skins off peppers ONCE still has lasting effect on surrounding areas. :)

Steve,
Let me ask, do your pots have holes in the handles in order to hang the pots on hooks? Or do the pots have curved handles that hook over a rod?
Are you looking for a design that is 32" square on 4 sides?
Do you recall what a rextangular shower curtain rod for a clawfoot tub looks like? This what i would do:

I could probably whip something up. We make a few different pot racks at work but they're all steel. I'll see what i can come up with for an idea.
Regards
Randy
P.S. If i design something and you like it I might have you test it out and i'll sell the pattern

Just sayin'...
Maybe I should just say “I Can’t get down very well any more”! But that would be admitting I’m getting old...
I had step 2 of a back surgery on December 31st, I feel better than I have in a long time But...
I’ve reexamined the cabinet where I keep the larger pots and pans and am leaning toward the pullout tray method suggested by Don.
I hadn’t heard the term “ageing in place” before, but Goggling it took me some interesting places...

My logical place for a pot rack would be “L” shaped 32” per side max...
Randy... I’d sure like to see your ideas!

Steve,
What style?
Victorian fretwork is my specialty but I'm also good with rustic slab, art deco, modern and traditional.

Here's my basic idea.

Scott...
90,000 BTUs... this is over a corner sink.
Randy...
My favorite is Art Deco. The kitchen is early Home Depot! The house was built by a preacher on the cheap in a really nice part of town... I have planned to redo the kitchen for the last 10 yrs! So... either Art Deco or traditional. I like your first idea very much, but may need a double deep!
SG
I just figured out that the pegs are two sided... Neat!

the links i listed was for a rectangular rounded ends tubing that actually hung from the ceiling like for a showercurtain rod for a clawfoot tub.

Jack...
I really need the “L” shape... Plus I thought I could make something nicer than I could buy, and I’m convinced of it now that I’ve seen Randy’s first idea!

Sorry Steve, pics helped. was searching and saw this solution for your lid storage. Cabinet slide was different too.

Scott...
Thanks for the photo... I’d never thought of sliding the lids down on the pan handles. That’ll reduce the number of hooks required considerably!

I like that one a lot. Might do that in my own kitchen.

We have pull out shelves in the pot cupboard. I should say shelf. Just the upper.
I've got a back full of rods and screws and I'm not a very good crawler, either.
I liked the idea of the pull-out hanger. The wife didn't. She said they'd rattle and bang and wobble and be all over the place. I'd still like it. :)
I'd probably like a stainless rack over the island, or better yet, copper with big copper hooks. Ya know, a rectangle with rounded corners? The boss would never go for that, either. :D

Steve, was admiring cabinet panels and just thought a full corner valence of 6/4 done the same as your panels but narrower, heck throw a cove on top, would look VERY custom. It would cover your curtain valence , but you could put those Low voltage halogen strips behind for indirect up/down. I'd join with a wedged through tenon in a dado, but I'm just partial to stuff you can't see. Hooks? I'd bang my own out of 1/4" sterling(not that expensive) or twined copper from old wire. Nice cabinet faces-you must have paid the carver a mint:)

Hey Scott:
Do you open those drapes? Pots from a rack at the top of the cabs would blow the view. I can think of a few designs that would work technically but hanging a bunch of pots in front of windows not only blocks the windows but also makes it a pain in the A to clean them. Tell Miss Lisa my wife loves her pot drawers.

That's Steve's kitchen, Dave.
I told Lisa your wife loves her pot drawers, and she asked if it was the pull out dangly ones I showed her. Is that what she has?

Dave’s comments about the obstructed view got me wondering how it would look… I did this SketchUp render to satisfy my curiosity… I based my drawing on how I perceived I would execute Randy’s idea, combined with how I interpreted Scott P’s suggestion of a valence. I like the idea of incorporating a light fixture like Randy’s company does. Still thinking on that one.

I'm glad you were both paying attention!
When I do a typical pot drawer it is simply side mount full extension hardware and a shallow drawer with high front. Typical kitchen base cab will have two of them with a shallow drawer at the top. Makes access and cleaning easy. Raising the bar means dovetail drawers and undermount slides. We use one for the pots and one for the lids and small appliances.
IMHO added gallery rails are a waste.
I prefer a drawer face to pullout behind doors for this as you lose horizontal space with the latter (You need to block out the runners for clearance past the door and hinges when using)
Steve-Your bottom right or left cabinet could easily be converted.

In our redesigned kitchen, the corner cabinets have Lazy Susans, ALL of the lower cabinets have drawers. The kitchen has been delightful after the renovations and I don't miss base cabinets with helves and doors!

I’m so confused… I can’t decide… Pot hooks solve the immediate problem but… This kitchen is so small, the master bath is larger than the kitchen by more than 2X! No creative reallocation of floor space is feasible. I guess I’ll make drawers and slide hooks also! Our last house, I spent 30 years remodeling the kitchen bit by bit… Our kids claim we didn’t have doors on the cabinets for 29 of those years. That’s not quite the way I remember it… but close. Mrs. G says it’s all or nothing this time!
