There is an organisation here in my city that has a yearly fundraiser to help feed the homeless. The premise is to "fill the bowl" - and they have an auction which in the past was mainly pottery and ceramics - where local artists would make and donate a bowl, and local chefs would make a stew or soup and then the sell them off.

They are trying to broaden the idea, and I was asked if I'd be interested in donating a bowl or two for the event.

This gave me a chance to try an idea I have had in my head for a while. I used the SHopbot to carve out a rectangular vessel in a hunk of 7" by 12" by 3" walnut. Then, I hand carved the exterior, leaving it rough from the gouge, and sanded the inside smooth. I textured the perimeter of the top edge with a hand punch.

WIll be oiling it over the next few weeks, first coat on today.

If it were larger... sure!

I was just able to get this cut on my Buddy. If I were going to cut a vanity bowl, I would say 5 inches height would be necessary (based on the china ones I have used) and I'd have to clamp the material directly to the powerstick, as the 1 1/2" board on top takes up too much space.

This cut remarkably quickly. ROughed with a 1/2" endmill, and finished with a 5/8" round end mill, set at 3% step over, running at 360 IMP I think the roughing was about 10 minutes, finsihing about 13.

I wanted to do one more bowl for the event, from a piece of 12" 8/4 curly maple.

Although I like turning on the lathe, I wanted to try a bowl on the CNC router for a while now... here was a good chance.

I did the files in literally a few minutes (thanks Aspire!) and cut it out in about 15. Did the concave side first, flipped it over and did the bottom and the rim.

Nice stuff. Bowls and platters are kind of fun to design and make with the bot.

Well it only took me two years... ;)

I guess Im just too damn busy working to "play around"... this was a good excuse to make a few things. And they hopefully will raise a few dollars for the organisation.
