I am thinking of redoing my dust collection because i hate having to try to reattach the bag underneath with the metal clamp that i have to fight and i wanted to use something like this and wondered if there were anything i needed to be aware of like it sucking in the sides or?

Should be fine, I use the fiber drum that came with mine Dust Gorilla and it has lasted for 5 years and counting. The only thing is that if you use a bag that is a filter bag to collect the dust it is part of your surface area for air flow.

By the way, do think about the amount you can lift when emptying. i am not as young and indestructible as I used to be and the 30 gallon size is as much as I want to lift. If you are only using it to collect for your bot it should be fine. A planer you might want a bigger drum. Just saying.

I actually hadn't thought about that, good tip! I have a dolly so i can move it with that and if i only do wood chips it shouldn't be too heavy.

I use a 20 gal Rubbermaid "Brute" plastic trash bin with my dust collector. I have a weatherstrip stuck onto the flat top edge and pull the bin up to a mounting flange with a ratchet strap. The vacuum takes care of the rest.
Probably on the small side for professional use but I can still lift it up when full, turn over and empty into a black trash bag. I don't toss chips and dust directly in the large waste bin anymore since a trash hauler got panicked sometimes assuming the cloud wafting from his truck was smoke.

Jack,
I decided to spend the money once and be done with the problem of dust collection. I agree that fighting with the bags is a pain.
I have 2 collectors, one beside the dust collector in a closet and a second
unit beside my shopbot.
I purchased two 30 gal galvanized trash cans. I treat them gently and when emptying, I don't bang them around because the more damage to the rim, the poorer the ultimate seal.
I purchased 2 separator tops from Grizzly.com industrial. The collectors go in series to the dust collection piping. I no longer need to muck with the bags because 98% (guestimate) stays in the separators.
Even with 2 separators in series (shopbot -> Shopbot separator->whole system separator -> Dust Collector), there is plenty of suction at the shopbot.
Spend the money once, do it right and be done with the problem!
Thanks

My dust collection is a homemade cyclone mounted on top of a sealed box with a sealed door, I just put a regular can in the box and it fills up no strapping stuff on all the time.

Brian, you are a genius! That is exactly what I am going to do. Currently I have to wrestle around with C clamps and plywood adaptors for my metal trash can. No more!!...joe

Brian,
That does sound like a good idea for me. I have a delta dust collection and have been reading about the cyclones. Do you mind taking a few pics of your setup and posting?
Thanks,
Dave
