Got the design approved by the wife to be for our bay house!
Whats the best material to use for BEING on the S. Texas Gulf,
Matagorda Texas?
We are on the river a mile from the Gulf. Wind, Rain, salt, hot sun for just a few of the weather conditions.
The sign is very detailed and I would like to paint and add color to it.
What would be the best paints and finishes. Will use the paint mask material as suggested in other posts!!

Hey Mike
I didn't attach a pic.
I was just wanting suggestions on to what material I should use against the adverse conditions.
Would like for it to hold up for a while and not weather.

Exteria if you can find it or perhaps nyloboard. www.nyloboard.com (http://www.nyloboard.com/). Both of these products would do well in the harsh environment of the coast… I haven’t had much success getting either of these products in TX, so you may have to go with a dense HDU and hope for no hail storms!

If you are looking at wood, head toward one of the cedars or I have used White Oak (tight pore system), never Red Oak
I use AZEK (plastic) but has a wood look and feel. It will last your lifetime and you can get any thickness you want from Home Depot. Comes in 4x8 sheet, any typical thickness... When they deliver or you pick up, inspect the board because it may have gouges...
The heavy weight foams also work well. Made a 3D sign out of Durabond. I would put a backing board on the back for hanging strength
Good luck!

Bob
The Azek sounds like what I may be looking for.
What about paint and finish?
Thanks

When cutting, I use carbide wood bits because it cuts like wood
but use either dust collection or a small vacuum blowing chips away.
The issue is that at 12K RPM, the chips are just hot enough to slight
melt and restick to the material. Not a big deal but if you can remove it while cutting.
I used the exterior Behr Paint but did prime first (colored primer to match) and then 3 coats of finish color.
After the three coats, let dry for 3-4 days in warm environment and then mask. Prime and paint letters through the mast and let dry.
I like to paint back and sides while mashed
Demask carefully and then touch up anything that needs it
On my V sign, I mounted aluminum angle on back to give broad holding power. I glue (epoxy) and then screw the angle on the back
That is it!
