I seen some of these online last week and while i was home i figured i would give it a try. Each picture is made up of roughly 10,000 holes of different diameters/depths. The pictures ended up being mothers day gifts for the Grandmas. the pictures are 15x15 and are cut on some cheap laminated white shelving i bought at HD. Each took between 1.5-2hrs to complete.

This was asked along time ago and i recall seeing some building and other pictures that a guy created using a program he developed but i don't recall his name. I'd be interested in finding out what determines the diameter/depths of holes. I'm sure it has to do with certain colors/brightnesses?

These pictures always look good from a distance but i'd be curious to see something closeup. Seems like the closer you get the less detail you perceive:confused: looks good though!

Halftone images with variable dia circles based on the gray shade. These circles are simply vcarved . So their are no holes;)

There are many methods of getting a halftone... Here’s one.
I like his “line” tones as they cut faster than “dots” due to less Z action.

I did a lot of these a couple of years ago using Jasons program to create a DXF which I them brought into VCarve and created toolpaths for.

You have to be careful with the overall size and photos with a lot of details as it's very easy to create massive toolpaths that take many hours to run.

Here is a link to the free software that i used http://www.students.tut.fi/~syvajar3/
It was really user friendly and can create wavy line or dot halftones.
