Please HELP! I have messed up my first 3d roughing cut really badly, and I don't know why.....

The two attachments show the part I was going to cut. I had programmed Aspire to make .25" passes with a 1/2" end mill. Instead, on the first pass, the bit plunged all the way through my 1.25" thick MDF (for test cutting purposes, later to be made from good wood), and cut .25" deep into my table top! YIKES!

They say you are supposed to turn the machine off as soon as it makes bad noises,,,,, well, I heard terrible squealing and knew something was really wrong. But instead of hitting the stop button, I stupidly grabbed for my ear protectors. And for the mountains of sawdust that piled up, I didn't realize what was happening until maybe 30 seconds, by which time, I had ruined my test piece...:(

My first reaction was that I had not set up my model to zero from the top of the material. But the two attached screen shots show my Job Setup and Material Setup were both set to zero off of the top of the material. However, until a week ago, I did have my model set up to zero from the table top. But since I am used to zeroing off of the material top, and it is a big hunk of flat material, with plenty of surrounding waste, I saw no problem in zeroing off the top. So somehow, did that change not propagate through?

Also, in the Material Setup panel, note the Modeling Plane Z shows as -1.25 inches. Would that indicate my problem? I wasn't worried about the Model Position in Material panel, even though it looks bad with 0" gap above and below the model, because my model is really only 1" thick, except for the high spot of the foot which gets to be 1.4" thick. But I sliced the model into 1.25" slices, and figured I would just glue the little bit of foot on by hand.

I have the Shopbot file and will send that to anyone who may want to see it.

I thank anyone who is willing to look and figure out what I have messed up! Thank you very much!!!!!! Chuck

Chuck…
Can you post the first 100 lines or so of the .spb file?

Chuck…
The file is indeed stepping down in .25 increments… somehow the Z-zero was set to the bed. Try zeroing to top of material again!
SG
PS
Not the job setup but the physical zeroing with the z-zero plate.

Don't fret, Chuck. You are learning...and whenever you learn something new there is bound to be chaos and/or mistakes. You'll figure it out & 3D will be old hat in no time.

Thank you Steve!!!

I put the material back on the table top, re-zeroed it with the aluminum plate, removed the material, and did an "air cut". There was no problem. I let it run for a minute, and by the looks of it, the cutter went down about .25". But it certainly did NOT plunge into the table top, which is was happened the first time.

I know I zeroed to the material surface the first time, as I sat down at the PC to load the file, and went OOPS, I still had the warning to remove the zeroing plate on the screen. And other than one experiment a year ago, I have always only zeroed from my material top.

I am very glad I didn't ruin a good piece of wood, but how do I keep from having the machine go crazy and plunge into my table top again?

I feel very insecure right now. I have done a good deal of simple 2D cutting on my Bot, and never had it do anything like this. Do I just cross my fingers? Any suggestions?????

Thank you Steve!!!!!!!!!!!

Chuck,

I can't tell you how many times I used to forget to zero the SB. I'd set my cutter height and then forget to tare. Now I move to 1" above my set zero with a gauge block to double check. Even grabbing for the block remins me that I've zero'd correctly.

EDIT: Unless there was a controller hiccup?

The older I get, the more important it is that I always do my procedures to a routine… For example, I always zero from the top of my material in the software, but in actuality I zero from the bed, raise up the DESIGN thickness and re-zero. This keeps me from having to change my design software settings. Naturally, if I’m v-carving I zero to the actual material, but I still haven’t had to make any change to my software settings.

Hello, here is an update:

a) I put a piece of blue Dow Styrofoam on my Bot and have completed the 3D roughing cut. It went fine. I hate to think I messed up zeroing my bit, as that is pretty basic, and has never been a problem before. But I hate the thought that there is a gremlin in my Bot, so I'll swallow my pride and hope it was my brain's problem.

b) At the very end of the 3D roughing cut, I got a screen error message! It said:
"Tool Stop Button On Current Line 21497"

I got confused again, because it stopped after all the cutting was done.

LINE
21495 Turning Router Off
21496 S0, 1, 0
21497 J2, 0.0000, 0.00000 (I didn't count the number of zeros)
21498 End

Can anyone tell me why I would have gotten this error message, and how to stop it from happening again????

c) I am doing the 3D finishing operation now.

Thanks again, Chuck

The 3D finish cutting just got done, and worked fine EXCEPT, I again got the error message: "Tool Stop Button On Current Line 61844"

Chuck, I have had similar error message and after some testing I found a wago connector with a loose wire. It was giving intermittent error messages.

Thanks Steve and Bob.

In addition to getting this false error message that the Stop Button had been pressed after the 3D roughing, and the 3D finishing, I think the same thing happened after the profile/cutout operation.

I had company over, and left the machine running. When I came downstairs a few hours after starting the profile cut, the cutting operation had completed, but the flashing red LED on the SB3 control panel was flashing, indicating that the Stop Button had been depressed, but there was NO error message on the screen. I am only wondering if it timed out after sitting there for perhaps 3 hours.

If I have a loose connector, I can see making a short cut program to create the problem, so I can then wiggle connectors to see if the problem goes away, but that sure sounds pretty primitive, and hit and miss.

Anyone else have any suggestions as to why I would seem to consistently get a false Emergency Stop Button message, that is coupled with a system response that would make it look like the Stop Button had actually been pressed? And this happens right at the very end of when the cutting operations have been completed.................

Thanks, Chuck

Chuck,
Sometimes you just have to deliberately slow down and do a mental checklist countdown just to make sure you are doing it all right.

How many times have you gotten in your car to go to work only to not recall making the trip, because you're kind of on autopilot.

I have two things I do..nd
I put PAUSEs in the beginning with tool size and ask if I zeroed

Makes you think epecially if you are in a pretty routine set of cuts.

The other thing is that my limits burnt out (assume to lightning or some nasty spike from the power company). I was sent replacements but have not installed them. the system asks me if I want to RESUME QUIT CANCEL every time I run a script..

I have to hit R for RESUME each time but it is that action that has saved me many times.... ARE YOU REALLY READY TO CUT THAT PART??

Thanks

Although the error msg is strange ...
It appears to be missing the comments mark. You need the '

'Turning router OFF
SO,1,0
J2,0.000000,0.000000
END

As Brady says You are learning. When I am away from my bot for more than a couple of days I assume I've forgotten everything. I double and triple check the material z before I start the file. One other habit I've gotten into is to check the first lines of code to make sure of where it will cut.

Broken bits and holes in your spoil board are just par for the course.

Thank you everyone for your comments and suggestions which I appreciate greatly.

Joe, as to the missing ' mark, maybe that is bad note taking on my part, I should have taken a screen shot. I will next time this happens.

David, I am afraid you are correct in my need to assume I have forgotten everything. I try to worry about what may go wrong, so that I prevent problems that way, and when I stop worrying about what might go wrong, something goes wrong!

Thanks again, Chuck
