View Full Version : Abrupt stop at end of x-axis change of direction

I was running a 3d file today and about 2/3 of the way through the cut I had this happen. As soon as it came to the end of the x-axis travel on a raster cut pattern the gantry would come to an abrupt stop then reverse direction. Prior to this the change of direction was a smooth transition from one direction to the other. Once I stopped the file and restarted it, everything seemed to be working fine. Anyone have any idea what happened there. As far as I tell, the cut image shows no lost of steps. But the abrupt change of direction of the gantry felt like it would shake the machine apart.

Could have been a brief hiccup in data flow. Is this with an Alpha machine? Some ramp adjusting for 3D work might help. I'm also guessing that your running version 3.8.XX. I've seen where ramping disappears and things start running in a real abrupt manner or things start running at only ramp speed and becomes very slow. It usually takes a break like a jog move to wake it up.

I've got no answers for you, but keep an eye on it and if it keeps happening, send a report to SB HQ.

It's PRTstandard and I have adjusted the ramping values based on what information I found on the forum about a year ago. The machine worked smoothly up to this recent event. I was actually watching the machine when it decided to start doing these abrupt stops and didn't see or hear anything odd happen prior to it doing this. So was very surprised when it started doing this. My first thought was that it somehow lost its ramp value settings but I not sure if that is possible.

I'm still experiencing this issue with my machine "As soon as it came to the end of the x-axis travel on a raster cut pattern the gantry would come to an abrupt stop then reverse direction. Prior to this the change of direction was a smooth transition from one direction to the other." I've checked over the mechanical of the machine, played with a variety of ramp settings, slowed the cutting speed way down but still getting the gantry slamming itself to a stop before changing direction. I've tried various versions of the controller software as well. Anyone have any other ideas were I should be looking to solve this problem.

Please post a screenshot of your VR settings.

My VR settings are presently set at what you recommend in your article on Ramping (March 2008). I did try your suggestions in your recent post of March this year as well, but still ending up with this abrupt stop issue.

Did you change the first two settings on the VR fill in sheet? They should be .4 - anything lower will cause it to do this at regular speeds.

You may want to delete the ShopBot.ini & start with a fresh config file for your machine using all defaults. The problem sounds like it is 'something stupid' that may have been overlooked.
